Healing scars has been something I have worked on with a routine and talking to doctors to find out what’s best for my skin.
I have had biopsies done throughout my time as a college student since my dad had a biopsy come back melanoma. I have had 9 biopsies, that have all healed differently, these are some things I have done to promote healing.
1. Item: Bio-Oil
I like to apply this in the morning and night. I have recently started to use this on my knee. I have noticed the color difference during the healing process. I have also seen people using it for other purposes. This was one product my dermatologist and I talked about to see if it would be a good fit.
⭐️Overall rating: 5/5
2. Item: Sunscreen
This is important to protect the scars during the healing phase, but to help prevent skin cancer. I like to use lotion sunscreen so I can apply a thicker layer of the scars.
⭐️Overall rating: 5/5
3. Item: Aquaphor
Previously I have used other hydrating lotion but my dermatologist recommended to use this to help keep moisture on the scar. This helps with itching due to dry skin and cracks.
⭐️Overall rating: 5/5
These are a few things that have helped my scars and the healing process. But I’m always open to new ideas!
... Read moreHey everyone! Following up on my initial scar care tips, I wanted to dive deeper into the journey of scar healing, especially since so many of you asked about the different stages and what to expect. It's a process, but understanding it truly empowers you to make the best choices for your skin.
From my own experience with various biopsies, I've learned that scar healing isn't a one-and-done thing. It generally goes through a few phases. Initially, right after an injury or surgery (like when I had fresh stitches), your body starts the inflammatory phase. This is when the wound is new, red, and sometimes a bit swollen. It’s crucial to keep it clean and protected. This is also where a good moisturizer like Aquaphor comes in handy, as my dermatologist stressed, to keep the area hydrated and prevent dryness that can lead to itching and cracking. For those early days, gentle care is key, and avoid picking or scratching at all costs!
Next comes the proliferative phase, where new tissue starts to form. You might notice the scar thickening or becoming a bit raised. This is when I really ramped up my use of Bio-Oil. Applying it morning and night, as I mentioned, helped address the color difference and promote smoother skin. The goal here is to encourage healthy tissue regeneration. This is also the phase where sun protection becomes non-negotiable. Applying a thick layer of sunscreen, as I do, is vital, not just to prevent discoloration but also to protect the delicate new skin from potential skin cancer risks—especially important for me given my family history.
Finally, there's the remodeling phase, which can last for months or even years. This is when the scar matures, flattens, and often fades significantly. This is where consistency with your products really pays off. While Bio-Oil helps with fading, continuing with Aquaphor keeps the skin pliable and moisturized, which is essential for continued improvement. Many people wonder, 'How long does it take for a scar to heal?' It truly varies based on the individual, scar size, and location, but generally, significant healing can take anywhere from 6 months to 2 years for a scar to fully mature and reach its final appearance. Patience and consistent care are your best friends!
Beyond the products, I've found a few other things helpful. Gentle scar massage, once the wound is fully closed, can break down collagen fibers and improve flexibility – just make sure it's not painful. Also, staying well-hydrated from the inside out supports overall skin health, which in turn aids in healing. Remember, every scar tells a story, and while we can't erase them completely, we can definitely help them heal beautifully and fade over time. Always consult with your doctor or dermatologist for personalized advice, as I did throughout my journey!
