Writing Descriptions That Work 😉

It’s so important to write descriptions that are specific and helpful. Our goal should be to make sure any and everyone can pick up what we have created and immediately know what to do.

Even though descriptions don’t come in fancy colors and are often an after thought once everything else has been done, spending some extra time to make them sparkle will only improve what you have already spent so much time doing.

What process do you take when writing descriptions? ✍️ #productdesign #tech #austinpowers

2025/8/20 Edited to

... Read moreYou know, for the longest time, I really struggled with writing descriptions. It felt like a chore, just something you had to do after building something cool. I'd pour all my energy into the design or the product itself, and then just slap on a few generic sentences. But then I started noticing how some of the most memorable things, even simple gestures like Dr. Evil's iconic peace sign in Austin Powers, communicate so much with minimal effort. It made me think: why can't my descriptions do that? That’s when I realized the magic isn't just in what you build, but how you talk about it. My big breakthrough came when I shifted my mindset from merely 'describing' to 'communicating value' in a way that’s as clear and impactful as those movie moments. It's like the OCR text I saw once said, 'clear copy is good design' – it's all part of the user experience. One of the first things I learned was to truly 'start with what it is'. I used to try to be clever or mysterious, but honestly, people just want to know upfront. If I'm describing a new app, I don't start with its potential; I start with its core function. 'This app helps you track your daily water intake.' Simple, direct, no guessing games. Then there's the power of 'everyday language'. I remember reviewing a description I wrote for a complex feature that used terms like 'asynchronous data synchronization protocol.' My friend, who isn't in tech, just stared blankly. Now, I try to talk like I'm explaining it to my grandma. 'It updates in the background, so your info is always fresh without you waiting.' Much better, right? Being 'specific' was another huge learning curve for me. I used to write things like 'This tool improves productivity.' But *how*? Now, I challenge myself to add detail. Instead of 'improves productivity,' I'd write, 'saves you 30 minutes a day on routine tasks by automating data entry.' That's a promise, not just a vague claim. Setting expectations early has also been a game-changer. I once launched a feature that took a few minutes to process without mentioning it, and users got frustrated, thinking it was broken. Now, if something takes time or has a limit, I make sure the description clearly states, 'This might take a moment to load' or 'You can upload up to 5 files.' It builds trust and avoids surprises. And here’s a big one: 'think like a user, not a marketer.' I used to get caught up in flashy buzzwords. But then I imagined myself as someone brand new to my product. What problems are they trying to solve? How can my description speak directly to their needs, not just boast about features? It's about empathy. Finally, I've seen firsthand how 'design and copy go together'. A perfectly written description can be invisible if it's buried in a tiny font or placed awkwardly. And conversely, amazing UI can be undermined by confusing text. It's a partnership. I’ve started paying more attention to 'watch how users react' to descriptions – are they scrolling past? Are they asking questions that the description should have answered? It's all about continuous improvement, just like any good design process. These little shifts in my approach have made a world of difference not just for my products, but for my confidence in communicating their value.
