A major key in designing is knowing what questions to ask and at what time. As kids sometimes we are discouraged from asking too many questions but as designers we stand to gain so much from asking questions.

This is where mastering the art of asking questions that might 'catch someone off guard' comes into play – not to trick them, but to reveal deeper truths that lead to truly innovative products. For me, it’s about embracing the spirit of Captain Jack Sparrow, where curiosity isn't optional; it's the compass leading to hidden treasure. In my own journey as a product designer, I’ve found that the most valuable feedback often comes when I push past the initial, expected answers. My goal is always to ensure that questions reveal the real problem, not just the symptoms. One of the simplest, yet most powerful, tools in my arsenal is the repeated 'Why?'. Just like Captain Jack seeking the heart of a mystery, continuously asking 'Why?' is your best tool to peel back layers of assumption and habit. When a user says they want a certain feature, I don't just note it down. I ask, 'Why do you want that?' and then 'Why is that important to you?' and so on, until I understand the core motivation or pain point. To really go beyond surface feedback, I've learned to formulate questions that gently challenge preconceived notions or elicit behavioral examples rather than just opinions. Instead of, 'Do you like this feature?', I might ask, 'Tell me about a time you tried to accomplish [task] and how this feature would have changed that experience.' This approach helps be specific, not sharp, ensuring the user feels comfortable sharing their genuine experiences without feeling interrogated. It's about creating a conversation where new insights can emerge. Another crucial aspect of asking insightful questions is listening – truly listening – to what isn't said. I've often discovered that silence is a clue too. Sometimes, a long pause before an answer, or a change in tone, can indicate a deeper struggle or a surprising insight that the user is hesitant to voice. It's in these moments that I gently probe further, perhaps with a follow-up like, 'What makes you hesitate?' or 'Can you tell me more about what you're thinking right now?' This helps build trust and encourages more profound sharing. It’s also vital to remember to ask users, not just teammates. While internal feedback is valuable, nothing replaces the candid, sometimes unexpected, insights from those who will actually use your product. I make sure to write my questions down beforehand, not as a rigid script, but as a guide to ensure I cover key areas and don't miss opportunities to dig deeper. This preparation allows me to be present and adaptable during conversations, ready to pivot based on what the user reveals. My experience has shown me that by strategically crafting questions that aim to 'catch someone off guard' – meaning, questions that make them think in a new way or articulate an unspoken need – we unlock a wealth of understanding. This isn't about trickery; it's about genuine curiosity and a commitment to understanding the human experience behind the product. By embracing these techniques, we move closer to designing products that don't just meet expectations, but truly surprise and delight.
