I don’t rush into Figma anymore

When I first started designing I would almost immediately jump into Figma and start trying to design solutions.

After many missed requirements, misalignments and frustration from feedback loops, I realized that almost 80% of the project work needs to be done before I start building solutions.

What are some habits you have before jumping into Figma? #productdesign #projects #figma

2025/10/12 Edited to

... Read moreBefore diving into Figma, it’s crucial to establish a strong foundation that can save you hours of frustration and rework later. One key habit is to ask comprehensive questions about the project to gain clarity on objectives and requirements. This ensures you understand not only key features but also potential edge cases, which can often be overlooked in the rush to design solutions. Keeping a list of these edge cases based on past experiences can help you anticipate and address unique scenarios that might arise. Another important step is documenting all feature requirements meticulously. This helps in knowing exactly how components should function and interact, reducing the risk of missing functionality or design inconsistencies. Additionally, creating a detailed list of components needed, including any variations, allows for an efficient audit of existing design systems. Reusing components where possible saves time and maintains design consistency. Collaborating closely with developers early on is invaluable. Developers provide insights into technical constraints or potential blind spots you might not be aware of as a designer. This teamwork helps align expectations and ensures your designs are feasible to implement. Organizing your Figma workspace thoughtfully is also essential. By keeping your files clean with separate pages for in-progress designs, mood boards, components, and final assets, you create an environment that’s easy for everyone on the team — from designers to developers — to navigate and understand. These practices not only enhance the design process but also foster better communication and a smoother feedback loop, enabling more successful project outcomes. By investing time upfront before opening Figma, product designers can deliver higher-quality work with fewer revisions and frustrations.
