How to fill in line art in procreate

so, there are, off the top of my head, 3 or 4 ways to fill in your line art in procreate, and none of them are wrong despite what anyone tells you, and personally, this is my favorite because it's the fastest.

1. make a layer underneath your line work

2. go to the selection menu

3. select "freehand selection tool"

4. select the color fill option (it will turn blue)

5. outline your shape area.

6. boom! you did it!

I like using this method because you can draw multiple shapes using the freehand selection tool and fill them a in with a color at once. options like using a reference layer work just fine but I find it Slightly more tedious, personally. same with drawing a shape below your line art and manually dragging the color fill. they both work but they're a little slower than this.

... Read moreAs a digital artist, I know the struggle of trying to get that perfect, clean fill for your line art in Procreate. While the freehand selection method described in the main article is my absolute go-to for its speed and efficiency, especially when I need to quickly COLOR LINEART across multiple shapes, there are always more tips and tricks to optimize your workflow. First off, before you even think about filling, let's talk about the foundation: your PROCREATE line art itself. Many artists ask, "how to do line art in Procreate" effectively for coloring? My personal advice is to ensure your lines are as clean and closed as possible. If you have gaps in your line art, even small ones, the color fill tools might 'leak' and fill the entire canvas, which is super frustrating! I always zoom in and meticulously close any gaps. Using a steady hand and a good brush (I love the 'Studio Pen' or 'Technical Pen' for crisp lines) makes a huge difference. This foundational step saves so much time later on. Now, about working with layers – a common query I see is "procreate how to fill lineart on a different layer." This is crucial! Always, and I mean *always*, put your COLOR FILL on a new layer below your line art layer. This way, your line art remains pristine, and you can easily experiment with colors without affecting your precious lines. I usually create a separate layer for each major color area or element (e.g., skin, hair, clothes) so I can adjust them independently. You can even use Alpha Lock on a fill layer to quickly add shadows or textures without going outside your base color. While the FREEHAND SELECT tool for COLOR FILL is brilliant, sometimes you need other options or face challenges. For instance, what if my "procreate fill tool leaves line"? This is a common issue when using the ColorDrop (drag-and-drop color) feature. Procreate has a ColorDrop Threshold that you can adjust. When you drag a color onto an area, keep your finger or stylus pressed down and drag it left or right. You'll see a blue bar at the top of the screen. Adjusting this threshold higher can help fill areas closer to the lines without leaving those annoying white pixels. Conversely, if it's filling too much, lower the threshold. Another lifesaver is Gap Assist in the Automatic selection mode; it helps close minor gaps for ColorDrop, preventing spills. For "how to fill a shape in Procreate" that's more complex than a simple outline, the FREEHAND SELECT tool, as the article mentions, is superb. But let's say you want to fill a simple, geometrically perfect shape. You can draw the shape (e.g., a circle or square), hold your stylus down at the end to snap it into a perfect form, then tap 'Edit Shape' to refine it. Once you have your perfect shape, you can easily OUTLINE it with FREEHAND SELECT and fill, or simply ColorDrop into it. I've found that combining these methods gives me the most flexibility. Finally, for those looking for a broader "procreate lineart tutorial" or even "how to turn an image into line art Procreate" as a starting point, remember that the filling process is just one part of bringing your art to life. After the base colors are down, consider adding shading, highlights, and textures on new layers to give your artwork depth and dimension. There are so many ways to approach COLOR LINEART in PROCREATE, so keep experimenting until you find what works best for your unique style!
