Heart valves maintain unidirectional blood flow and prevent regurgitation. The four main valves—the aortic, pulmonary, tricuspid, and mitral valves—each have specific locations and functions: the aortic valve controls blood flow from the left ventricle into the aorta, while the pulmonary valve regulates flow from the right ventricle into the pulmonary artery. The tricuspid valve separates the right atrium and ventricle, and the mitral valve controls flow between the left atrium and ventricle. Understanding common valve disorders like prolapse, regurgitation, and stenosis is important for clinical practice.
