Disabled Veteran

Shortly after this photo was taken I was in an accident and put into a coma on life support. My family was told I was going to die or remain in a vegetative state if I woke up, 22 years ago. I’ve since raised 2 children, obtained a Bachelor’s Degree, bought 2 homes, and more. God is Good! #veteran #HelloLemon8 #LasVegas

... Read moreMy journey after breaking my neck and overcoming such a challenging injury has shown me just how crucial support systems are for disabled veterans. While my story focuses on personal resilience, I know many in our community search for practical help, and one incredible resource often comes up: service dogs. It's amazing how much a service animal can transform daily life. For veterans like me who might face physical limitations from injuries, or even invisible wounds like PTSD, these specially trained companions offer so much more than just friendship. They can help with mobility tasks, retrieve dropped items, remind us to take medication, or even provide comfort during anxiety attacks. Imagine the peace of mind knowing you have a dedicated partner to help navigate the world, especially after facing a life-altering event like the one I experienced. My own recovery was tough, and I can only imagine how much a loyal service dog could assist with the everyday struggles that aren't always visible. Many wonder, 'can I get a service puppy for free?' And the good news is, yes, it's often possible! Many non-profit organizations are dedicated to pairing deserving veterans with service dogs at little to no cost to the recipient. These organizations often rely on donations and grants to cover the extensive training and care of these animals. Finding the right program involves some research, but it's a journey well worth taking. You'd typically start by looking for reputable organizations that specialize in training service dogs for veterans, like Patriot Paws, K9s for Warriors, or America's VetDogs. Each program has its own application process, which usually involves demonstrating a need for a service animal due to a qualifying disability. They often look for veterans who would greatly benefit from the assistance a service dog provides, enhancing their independence and quality of life. It's important to remember that 'free' often means the cost to the veteran is covered, but the dog itself represents a significant investment in training and care from the organization. These aren't just pets; they are highly skilled assistants. The training can take months, sometimes even years, to ensure the dog can perform specific tasks tailored to the veteran's needs. If you're a veteran considering a service dog, I highly encourage you to explore these options. It's another way to reclaim your independence and continue thriving, just like I've strived to do after my accident. Don't let the potential cost deter you – there's incredible support out there for our veteran community.

We should be more patient with disabled ppl!
Before moving, my husband drove me to Goodwill with 8 big bags of my clothes. I asked the only worker there how it works. But he just handed me a form. I thought he didn’t hear what I asked, so I asked again only got a muffled mumble. Back in the car, I complained to my husband: “This job’s boring,

read stories with disabled main characters!
i don’t read a ton of YA contemporary, but as a disabled reader, i always search for books that have wonderful disability rep. and there are so many books for young readers that nail it! these two books both made me feel very seen and would have meant the world to me as a teenager. #lemon8pa
