Healing the mind by caring for the body.

The key lies in tuning into the body’s sensations—feeling tightness, warmth, or tingling—and using gentle breathwork to aid in nervous system regulation. For example, I found that combining slow, mindful breathing with progressive muscle relaxation helped me release chronic tension that I wasn’t consciously aware of. Integrating grounding practices, such as focusing on what you can see or feel in the present moment, further anchors your awareness and helps dissipate anxious thoughts. Yoga and other mindful movements, even just gentle stretching or walking, invite the body to reconnect and release stored trauma or stress gradually. One simple exercise I regularly practice is seated awareness: sitting comfortably, slowly scanning my body for any neutral or comfortable sensations, then consciously breathing in for four counts and exhaling for six counts. This not only creates calm but fosters compassion and patience towards myself during healing. Working alongside a trained somatic therapist can deepen this process by helping track subtle body sensations linked to emotional release. However, you can also start with small daily moments of presence and kindness toward yourself in your body. Somatic healing reminds us that the path to mental wellness is intricately connected to physical awareness and care. By cultivating this connection through gentle, intentional practices, healing truly happens in these small yet powerful moments of embodiment and self-compassion.
