to feel like your not real

2025/11/16 Edited to

... Read moreHave you ever woken up and felt like you're just... not quite *there*? Like you're watching a movie of your own life, or that your hands don't really belong to you? That chilling sensation, to feel like you're not real, is something I've grappled with, and trust me, it can be incredibly isolating and frightening. It's often referred to as derealization or depersonalization (DP/DR), and it’s a dissociative experience where your mind feels detached from your body or your surroundings. For me, it was like a constant fog, a barrier between myself and the world, making everything feel strange and distant. I remember days where every conversation felt rehearsed, every interaction felt forced, and even looking in the mirror was unsettling. It wasn't just a fleeting thought; it was a pervasive feeling that made simple tasks feel impossible. I kept wondering, 'Am I losing my mind?' But through research and eventually, professional support, I learned that these feelings, while distressing, are often a coping mechanism our brains deploy during extreme stress, anxiety, or even after traumatic events. Your brain is trying to protect you, but it ends up making you feel incredibly disconnected. The journey to becoming real in days isn't a quick fix, but it's absolutely a journey you can start today, with small, consistent steps. Here are some of the things that have truly helped me feel more grounded and present: 1. Grounding Techniques: When that wave of unreality hits, I turn to my senses. Holding an ice cube, listening intently to five distinct sounds, naming five things I can see, touching different textures – these bring me back to the present moment. Stamping my feet or splashing cold water on my face also works wonders. 2. Mindful Movement: Getting my body involved helps immensely. Short walks where I focus on the feeling of my feet on the ground, stretching, or even doing a quick dance to my favorite music. It pulls me out of my head and into my physical self. 3. Journaling My Experience: Writing down exactly how I feel, without judgment, helps externalize the sensations. It also allows me to track patterns and identify potential triggers, giving me a sense of control. 4. Creating Routine & Predictability: DP/DR thrives on uncertainty. Establishing a consistent daily routine for sleeping, eating, and even small tasks helps anchor me. It creates a sense of stability in a world that often feels unstable. 5. Connecting (Safely): While it's tempting to withdraw, reaching out to a trusted friend or family member, or even joining an online support group, can remind you that you're not alone. Sharing my experience validated my feelings and reduced the shame. 6. Limiting Triggers: For me, lack of sleep and too much caffeine could exacerbate things. Identifying and managing these personal triggers has been crucial. It’s about building a lifestyle that supports mental well-being. It’s a process of rediscovery, learning to trust your senses and your experience again. While 'in days' might imply instant results, it's the consistent effort each day that truly makes a difference. Don't underestimate the power of small steps. If you're struggling with to feel like you're not real, please know that recovery is possible, and there are many paths to finding your way back to a vibrant, present existence. You deserve to feel fully alive.
