How I shape and take care of my nails 💅

My nail shape is soft square, and I prefer it because it gives a clean, structured look while still being practical and durable for daily activities. I’ve learned to appreciate growing my nails naturally instead of relying on acrylics. When I used to get acrylic nails, my natural nails became brittle and weak over time, so I made the decision to stop and focus on strengthening and growing them on my own. Now I maintain them myself and actually enjoy the process of caring for them.

Here’s how I take care of and maintain my nails:

💅 I let my nails grow out naturally instead of getting acrylic extensions

💅 Once they get a bit longer, I start shaping them myself

💅 I use a nail cutter first to control the length

💅 Then I refine the edges with a nail file to keep the soft square shape

💅 I slightly soften the corners so they don’t snag or break easily

💅 My nails naturally grow fast, which I believe is mostly due to genetics

💅 I also take supplements with biotin to help support nail strength and growth

💅 Applying coconut oil on nails and cuticles 2-3x a week before going to sleep, to keep them moisturized and healthier.

Nail shape really matters because it affects both appearance and function. The right shape can make nails look more polished, suit your fingers better, and reduce the chances of breakage. For me, the soft square shape is the best balance between style and strength, which makes it perfect for natural nail growth and low-damage maintenance.

But focusing on natural growth has been incredibly rewarding. One tip I found helpful is to be consistent with moisturizing your nails and cuticles. Using coconut oil a few times a week not only keeps them hydrated but also helps prevent peeling and breakage. Shaping your nails yourself can be relaxing and satisfying. I make sure to cut my nails while they’re dry, which helps avoid splitting. After using a nail cutter to shorten the length, I switch to a fine nail file to refine the shape. Soft square nails are perfect because the straight edges offer a neat look, and the slightly rounded corners prevent snagging — this has helped me keep my nails intact during daily activities and typing. In addition to external care, I started taking biotin supplements on recommendation from a dermatologist, and I’ve noticed my nails grow faster and seem stronger over time. It’s important to remember that nail health is often influenced by diet and genetics, so a balanced diet with enough protein, vitamins, and minerals supports healthy nail growth too. Finally, avoid harsh chemicals and always wear gloves if you're doing housework or using cleaning products. This simple change protects your nails from drying out or becoming brittle. Overall, natural nail care is about patience and gentle care — once you embrace this, the process becomes enjoyable and very fulfilling.
