Discernment: When the Wolf Howls🫶

Discernment: When the Wolf Howls

In the quiet of the afternoon, when the noise of the day settles for a moment, it’s a good time to pause and ask yourself a simple question:

What voices have been influencing my heart today?

Because not every voice that sounds confident is wise.

Not every opportunity is from God.

And not every person who smiles at you carries good intentions.

The enemy rarely approaches looking like a wolf.

Most of the time, he comes disguised as something familiar.

A distraction that looks harmless.

Advice that sounds reasonable.

A relationship that feels exciting but slowly pulls you away from God’s peace.

This is why Scripture speaks so much about discernment.

“Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God.” — 1 John 4:1 (NLT)

Discernment isn’t suspicion.

It isn’t paranoia.

Discernment is simply spiritual awareness.

It’s the quiet ability to notice when something is off.

It’s the wisdom to pause before you give someone influence over your life.

It’s the courage to step back when something disturbs your peace.

The good shepherd doesn’t panic when the wolf howls.

He positions himself.

He watches carefully.

He protects the flock.

He stands where danger cannot quietly slip in.

And if you belong to Christ, He is teaching you to live the same way.

You don’t have to respond to every message.

You don’t have to explain every boundary.

You don’t have to keep doors open that God is asking you to close.

Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is simply say:

“That does not have access to my life.”

Peace is not passive.

Love is not naive.

Wisdom is not weakness.

God is raising up people who walk in both compassion and discernment.

People who love deeply

but also see clearly.

So take a moment this afternoon.

Pause.

Breathe.

Invite the Holy Spirit to search your heart.

Ask Him:

“Lord, show me what belongs in my life

and what does not.”

Because when the Shepherd is guiding you,

even the sound of wolves cannot shake your peace.

“The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need.” — Psalm 23:1 (NLT)

... Read moreIn my own spiritual journey, I've found that practicing discernment is like tuning an inner radar to detect subtle signs that something may not be aligned with God's truth. It’s easy to overlook how distractions or seemingly harmless advice can steer us away from peace if we’re not careful. One practical approach I've adopted is taking regular moments throughout my day to pause and reflect quietly, asking myself, “Is this feeling or influence drawing me closer to God or pulling me away?” The phrase "the enemy rarely approaches looking like a wolf" truly resonated with me because it highlights how deceptive influences often appear appealing or reasonable. For example, I once accepted guidance from someone who projected confidence but whose intentions were unclear; it took an uneasy feeling and prayerful discernment before I recognized the misalignment and chose to step away. Scripture, especially verses like 1 John 4:1, encourages us to "test the spirits"—which doesn’t imply mistrust but spiritual awareness and wisdom. This discernment is supported by cultivating an active prayer life to invite the Holy Spirit’s insight and by learning from the example of the Good Shepherd who guards the flock vigilantly. By setting healthy boundaries and not feeling compelled to respond to every influence, we protect our peace without closing our hearts. Ultimately, discernment involves balancing compassion with clarity. We can love deeply while also being wise about the access we grant to others in our lives. Saying "that does not have access to my life" can be one of the most loving and spiritually courageous decisions we make. For anyone seeking to grow in discernment, I recommend journaling your experiences with the voices and opportunities around you, prayerfully asking God what belongs in your life and what doesn’t. Over time, this will sharpen your spiritual awareness and bring peace that stands firm even when challenges or "wolves" arise.
