The Burden of the Watchman
📖 Ezekiel 33
Being a watchman is not about feeling spiritually superior.
It is not about arguing online. It is not about condemning people. It is not about fear-driven religion.
The true burden of a watchman is love.
God told Ezekiel: “When you hear the word from My mouth, give them warning from Me.” — Ezekiel 33:7 NIV
A watchman sees danger approaching and refuses to stay silent.
Not because they hate people… But because they love them enough to speak.
Many people want encouragement without correction. Comfort without conviction. Peace without repentance.
But real love warns before destruction comes.
The watchman does not sound the trumpet to shame people. The trumpet is sounded to wake people up.
And carrying that burden can feel heavy sometimes.
Because when God opens your eyes to certain things, you cannot pretend not to see them anymore: • spiritual compromise • lukewarmness • addiction • bitterness • deception • broken families • wounded hearts • wandering sheep
The temptation is either:
Stay silent out of fear
or
Speak harshly out of frustration
But the heart of God is neither silence nor cruelty.
Jesus spoke truth boldly AND loved deeply.
A faithful watchman does both.
And watchmen do more than warn… They intercede.
They pray. They stand in the gap. They plead for mercy. They fight for souls in the secret place before they ever speak publicly.
Some of you have felt a burden lately you could not explain. A stirring in your spirit. A heaviness for people. A desire to pray more deeply.
That may not be anxiety. That may be God awakening the watchman within you.

🙏 Prayer: Father, teach me to carry the heart of a true watchman. Give me courage to speak truth with love and humility. Help me never use conviction as a weapon, but as an invitation back to Your heart. Teach me to pray faithfully and stand in the gap for others. In Yeshua’s name, Amen.

Reflecting on the role of a watchman described in Ezekiel 33, I’ve come to understand it as one of both profound responsibility and immense love. This calling isn’t about asserting spiritual dominance or unleashing harsh judgment; it’s about a sincere commitment to caring for others by warning them of impending danger through truth spoken in love. In my own experience, stepping into this role means learning to discern when to speak and how to communicate difficult truths without alienating others. It’s a delicate balance—avoiding silence driven by fear of rejection, while also resisting the urge to speak out of frustration or condemnation. True watchmanship requires prayerful intercession, standing in the gap before addressing a situation publicly, much like the watchman Ezekiel who prayed and pleaded for mercy for the people. This ministry of watching and warning has revealed to me that discernment is a gift meant for protection, not control. It often involves confronting harsh realities like spiritual compromise, brokenness, addiction, and deception—but always with the hope of restoration and healing. Like the watchman’s trumpet sounding to awaken rather than shame, our words should be invitations to turn back to love and repentance. It’s natural to feel a heavy burden carrying these concerns for others, but it's also an invitation from God to love more deeply. Carrying this burden calls for humility and courage to overcome people-pleasing tendencies or fear that would keep one silent. The watchman’s heart combines bold truth and tender compassion much like Jesus, who loved deeply while speaking tough truths. If you sense a stirring in your spirit—a heaviness for people around you or a desire to pray deeper—this may well be the awakening of a watchman’s heart within you. Embracing this calling encourages us to actively pray, intercede, and prepare to speak truth lovingly when the time is right. It’s a journey of loving others enough to protect and uplift them through God's guidance and strength.
