Depressed Sanji is better

As a long-time One Piece fan, I've always found Sanji to be one of the most compelling and, honestly, most tragic characters. People often focus on his comedic perverted side, but for me, his 'depressed' moments are what truly define his depth. It's not just about him being sad; it's about the immense weight he carries from his past, which makes his loyalty and chivalry so much more profound. His backstory is, without a doubt, one of the most heartbreaking in the series. From the sheer starvation he faced with Zeff on that deserted rock, to literally owing his life and culinary skills to him, Sanji's early life shaped him into the devoted protector he is. That sense of debt and responsibility runs deep, and you can see how it fuels his constant need to give back, even at his own expense. This foundational trauma from the Baratie Arc explains so much of his future actions and internal conflicts, making small moments of his sadness even more poignant. Then we have moments like the Water 7/Enies Lobby arc, which really highlighted his internal struggles. I remember the pain watching him confront Luffy, even kicking him, all for the sake of trying to save Robin. It was a choice born out of desperation and his unwavering commitment to his friends, even when it meant being the 'bad guy.' That iconic scene in the rain where Luffy refuses to give up on him, and Sanji's quiet, tearful acceptance – it still gives me chills. It's a powerful display of friendship and the burden Sanji often feels, showcasing his true character beneath the suave exterior. Later on, in the Dressrosa Arc, we see flashes of how his past influences his present, particularly with Princess Viola. My heart ached for him when the narrative explored how he almost left the Straw Hats. It's those instances where his incredibly kind heart and chivalrous nature, often exaggerated for comedy, become genuinely vulnerable. He tries to save everyone, sometimes forgetting to save himself, echoing the difficult choices he's made throughout his life. But it's the Whole Cake Island Arc where Sanji's 'depressed' state is most explicitly explored. Being forced back into his horrific Vinsmoke family, facing an arranged marriage with Pudding, and the sheer emotional abuse he endured – it was brutal. Seeing him try to sacrifice himself, putting on a brave face while internally crumbling, was so impactful. The small gesture of Pudding's "Don't catch a cold" scene resonates so deeply because it was a rare moment of genuine care amidst his despair. It’s hard not to feel for him when you understand the layers of his self-sacrifice and the incredible pressure he was under. These moments of profound sadness and internal conflict are precisely what make Sanji, for me, One Piece's best character. His struggles make his triumphs more meaningful. His commitment to never letting his hands be used for fighting women, even when it puts him at a disadvantage (remember those 'times Sanji almost died from seeing a woman' moments?), comes directly from his upbringing and his ideals. He carries the weight of so many expectations and so much pain, yet he still strives to protect everyone he cares about, like when he saved Cosette. Understanding his sad backstory and the specific instances where he’s shown deep despair truly enriches his character, making his bright smile all the more precious when it appears. His strength isn't just physical; it's emotional resilience forged in hardship.
