Of cloaks and swords
Charcoal/ pastels
Creating art is a journey of discovery, not just for the viewer, but especially for the artist. My piece, 'Of Cloaks and Swords,' rendered in charcoal and pastels, is a perfect example of how diverse inspirations can converge into a single visual narrative. For me, it’s about more than just drawing; it’s about weaving stories and meanings into every stroke, drawing from unexpected sources like tarot and ancient heraldry. I’ve always been captivated by the rich tapestry of symbols found in medieval lore and fantasy. The motif of the heraldic lilly, or fleur-de-lis, for instance, often pops up in my thoughts when I'm sketching out fantasy concepts. It's not just a beautiful design; it carries centuries of history, representing royalty, purity, and even divine right. Thinking about how these symbols are used in comic books and graphic novels, where every detail can convey deeper meaning, truly excites me. They add layers to characters and worlds, much like they do in my own ‘cloaks and swords’ theme, hinting at noble quests or hidden lineage. When I applied charcoal and pastels to this piece, I envisioned how the heraldic lilly might subtly adorn a knight's shield or a sorceress's cloak, adding a whisper of ancient power or untold history to the scene. Another profound source of inspiration for my art comes from the mystical world of tarot, particularly the Ace of Cups. This card, for those familiar with tarot meanings, signifies new beginnings, emotional fulfillment, intuition, and creative potential. It's a powerful symbol of a heart overflowing with love and compassion. When I'm brainstorming ideas for a piece that evokes mystery and emotion, I often reflect on the Ace of Cups. What kind of emotional journey are my characters on? What new paths are opening up for them? The concept of 'ace of cups combinations' further deepens this, as the card's meaning can be nuanced by its surrounding cards, suggesting complex emotional landscapes or intertwined fates. I try to imbue my figures with this sense of emotional depth, allowing the viewer to ponder the unspoken feelings and nascent hopes within the artwork. Perhaps the cloaked figure is on the cusp of a profound emotional revelation, guided by an unseen force, much like the Ace of Cups suggests. Working with charcoal and pastels allows me to capture the ethereal, often somber, yet deeply emotive qualities these inspirations demand. Charcoal provides the dramatic depth and shadow essential for cloaks and the glint of swords, while pastels offer a subtle infusion of color or a mystical glow, perfect for hinting at symbolic elements without being explicit. This blend of mediums helps me translate the abstract concepts of heraldic power and tarot wisdom into a tangible, visually compelling piece. It's an unfiltered expression of how ancient symbols and spiritual insights can ignite contemporary art, creating something that resonates on multiple levels. It’s a joy to bring these elements together, hoping others might find new connections and stories within the art, just as I do in its creation.
