Unfortunate Side Of Freelancing

Freelancing is great.

You get full control over your time, your output reflects your effort, and honestly, I love it. No complaints.

But it is not always perfect.

Payments.

Delayed payments, forgotten invoices, or vague terms, they’re way more common than you’d expect.

It’s super common to run into delays or “accidental oversights” that conveniently forget your invoice. So at some point, you realise you’ve got to be that annoying little piece of shit who follows up and asks again. Not because you like it but because you have to.

Quick tip when discussing payment terms with clients:

• Always confirm in writing before starting work

• Clarify:

🔹 When you’ll be paid (date or time frame)

🔹 How you’ll be paid (bank, PayNow, Wise, etc.)

🔹 What happens if payment is late (grace period? interest?)

• And don’t be afraid to say:

“Just confirming our payment terms so I can plan my workflow accordingly 😊”

It’s not “being a piece of shit.”

It’s being a freelancer with boundaries.

because we have freelancers and we are paid for our expertise, not our kindness .

... Read moreOne valuable lesson I learned early on as a freelancer is that establishing clear payment terms upfront is essential to avoiding confusion and delays. Make sure to get everything in writing before starting any work. When I spell out key details such as payment date, method of payment (like bank transfer or PayNow), and policies for late payments, it sets expectations firmly and professionally. I also find it helpful to maintain polite but consistent communication when payments are overdue. Using phrases like, “Just confirming our payment terms so I can plan my workflow accordingly 😊” keeps the tone friendly yet assertive. From my experience, many clients simply need a gentle reminder to prioritize your invoice. Additionally, using digital tools to track invoices and send automated payment reminders can save time and reduce stress. Apps and platforms designed for freelancers often allow you to attach your payment terms clearly, making it easier to refer back to agreements. Lastly, be prepared to pause work if payments are significantly delayed. As tough as this can be, safeguarding your financial stability is crucial. I’ve found that clear boundaries not only protect my income but also reinforce professionalism, encouraging clients to respect deadlines. By taking these proactive steps, freelancers can confidently manage payment processes and reduce the frustration of chasing late payments.

3 things I've learnt as a design freelancer
1. Opportunity is everywhere — just know where to look 2. Show what you can do, not what you have done (as a beginner, portfolio is everything because you don't have previous clients to show) 3. Professionalism and structure is very important (increase your reliability and client return rate)

What I learnt from my mentor @teacher_luxia is that children and young teens carry a strong pure positive energy. And unethical spiritual practitioners who want to have a shortcut to elevate their energy levels may choose to siphon these energies from the youth as with this unfortunate case.
