Cafe staple: Yuzu Matcha Latte!

I've seen this drink at multiple different cafes so I decided to come up with a recipe for it!

Personally I'm not a huge fan of it, but if you've tried this matcha in a cafe and want to recreate it on your own, it's actually really easy to make!

The key to this drink’s unique taste lies in balancing the earthy, slightly bitter notes of a high-quality matcha with the tart, aromatic citrus of yuzu peel powder. When I first tried crafting this latte, I found that using a nuttier matcha variety helped to complement the vibrant yuzu flavors without overwhelming the palate. The Okumidori First Harvest matcha from Wazuka, Minamiyamashiro—known for its smooth texture and rich, grassy aroma—works wonderfully for this. I measured out 3 grams of sifted matcha and 1 gram of yuzu peel powder, ensuring that the powders mix evenly to avoid clumps and achieve a smooth drink. A crucial step is whisking the matcha and yuzu mixture with about 40ml of water heated to around 80°C. This temperature helps dissolve the powders efficiently without burning the delicate flavors. After whisking to a fine froth, adding 130g of oat milk completes the latte, lending a creamy texture and subtle sweetness that balances the tartness of the yuzu. To elevate the visual appeal and tasting experience, I like to serve it layered over cubed ice. The iced presentation is particularly refreshing on warm days and adds a lovely visual contrast, making the layers of green matcha and sparkling yuzu-infused milk stand out. While I personally found my palate leaning more towards traditional matcha lattes, this yuzu variant is a fantastic way to enjoy matcha if you’re looking for something a bit different. It offers a zesty twist that brightens the drink, making it ideal for those who appreciate citrus flavors alongside their tea. If you’re experimenting at home, consider adjusting the amount of yuzu peel powder to suit your taste—adding a bit more can ramp up the citrus punch, while dialing it back makes for a subtler effect. Oat milk is a great choice for plant-based milk options due to its creaminess and natural sweetness, but feel free to try almond or soy milk based on your preference. Overall, recreating the Yuzu Matcha Latte at home allows you to customize to your liking and enjoy a refreshing, café-quality beverage without the hassle. It’s a delightful treat for matcha enthusiasts eager to explore new and exciting flavor combinations.
