Ingredients
4 slices bacon
1 head of cabbage
3 tablespoons of sugar
Preheat a deep skillet or wok over medium heat.
Slice cabbage along the stem direction into 1/4" wide strips. Remove any really thick pieces as they dont like to soften up.
Fry the bacon until extra crispy, remove from the pan and then add in the cabbage. Stir to coat in bacon grease and the continue cooking, stirring occasionally until cabbage is soft and slightly browned.
Chop up the bacon into bacon bits and add back into pan with the cabbage along with 3 TBS of sugar. Stir well and continue to cook for 2-3 minutes.
Serve with any of your summer favorites!
Fried cabbage is a classic comfort food that brings together the rich flavors of crispy bacon and the natural sweetness of cabbage. What I love most about this dish is how easy it is to prepare and how versatile it can be. By using bacon grease to cook the cabbage, you get a depth of smoky flavor that makes the dish stand out. When slicing the cabbage, trimming away the thick stems helps the cabbage cook evenly and become tender without remaining tough. Adding sugar is an unexpected but delightful touch—it balances the savory bacon and brings out the natural sweetness of the cabbage, creating harmony in every bite. This side pairs wonderfully with a variety of summer dishes like grilled chicken, pork chops, or even a hearty BBQ spread. It’s a great way to add a vegetable element that feels indulgent but is nutritious as well. I also find that letting the fried cabbage sit for a few minutes after cooking allows the flavors to meld together even more. For those looking to make it vegetarian, substituting bacon with smoked paprika and olive oil can provide a similar smoky flavor, though the texture will change. Overall, this fried cabbage recipe is a fantastic addition to any home-cooked meal, bringing comfort and flavor without complicated steps.
