When people ask me what it's like being a 'commuter college student,' it’s more than just saying I live off-campus. Speaking of off-campus living, today's little adventure included a mandatory informational session. Honestly, it was a bit of a rant-worthy experience. They made it sound like we had to attend to be approved for off-campus living, even though I'm already a commuter. It felt like a bit of a power play, making us sit through a lengthy meeting about something that should be straightforward. These kinds of bureaucratic hurdles can be frustrating when you're already juggling classes like research methods in psychology and working part-time. It just adds another layer of stress to an already packed schedule. So, if you’re considering becoming a commuter student, here are a few tips from my own journey: Always pack essentials like snacks, a charger, and even a change of clothes if you plan on staying late. Find a 'home base' on campus – a library carrel, a student lounge – where you can relax or study between classes without having to trek back home. And most importantly, make an effort to connect! It makes all the difference in feeling truly part of the university experience, even if your bed is miles away.
