For me, making 'two spirit art' isn't just a hobby; it's a vital, transformative practice that significantly contributes to my mental health and overall well-being. Each stroke of paint, every found object I incorporate, is a step in a healing process, allowing me to express emotions and stories that sometimes words cannot capture. My approach to art is unique, focusing on mixed media. I love the challenge and symbolism of using recycled bingo cards, acrylics, inks, and other found materials. There's something incredibly powerful about taking something discarded or commonplace and transforming it into a piece of art that speaks volumes. It’s a metaphor for life itself – finding beauty and purpose in unexpected places, and reclaiming narratives. This process of creation becomes a meditative act, providing a much-needed escape from daily stressors and a dedicated space for introspection. It’s where I can honor my ancestors, celebrate my unique path as an Indigenous Two-Spirit individual, and find strength in my cultural roots. The act of bringing these diverse elements together to form a cohesive vision is incredibly therapeutic. It allows me to process complex feelings, celebrate my identity, and share a part of my soul with the world. The textures and layers in my art reflect the many layers of my own experience, and the vibrant colors often symbolize hope and resilience. Through my work as an Indigenous Two-Spirit Artist, I aim to foster a deeper understanding of our communities and the rich tapestry of Two-Spirit identities. It's about visibility, affirmation, and creating a safe space for expression. I hope my 'two spirit art' not only provides a glimpse into my personal journey but also inspires others to explore their own creative outlets for mental wellness. Art, in any form, can be a powerful tool for healing, connection, and self-expression. It’s a testament to the strength found in embracing who you are, fully and proudly, and transforming personal experiences into something beautiful and meaningful.
