Does Anyone Actually Use Threads?!

About a year ago I signed up for threads with an old instagram account until a ban. However several months ago I signed up with my current instagram account and truth be told, it’s a cesspool, like X aka twitter. This app is so messy and disorganized to the point I’m contemplating the thought of deleting it again?

Thoughts on this platform?

My initial dive back in felt exactly as described – a bit of a chaotic mess, a feeling many share on the 'Social Networking' front. With 1.7M ratings and a 4.6-star average shown on the app store, you'd think it's a home run, right? But my personal experience, and what I hear from friends, often paints a different picture. On one hand, the premise of Threads – to 'Connect and share ideas' in a text-based format, seamlessly linked to Instagram – felt like a strong contender, especially at a time when many were looking for an alternative to X (formerly Twitter). The effortless sign-up using my existing Instagram account was a huge plus, and for a moment, I thought this could be a new, vibrant space for genuine conversation. However, the 'messy' and 'disorganized' feeling quickly set in for me. I found my feed frequently filled with content that didn't quite resonate, often from accounts I didn't follow or topics I wasn't interested in. It felt like the algorithm struggled to understand my preferences, making genuine connection harder to find. There's also the noticeable lack of robust search features and trending topics that make platforms like X so dynamic for real-time information. It often felt like shouting into the void, or getting lost in a constant stream of generic posts rather than engaging in meaningful 'Social Networking'. One of the biggest frustrations, and I've heard this from others too, is the difficulty in finding specific topics or participating in broader discussions. Unlike other platforms where you can easily jump into a hashtag or trending list, Threads often feels like a stream without clear navigation. This makes it challenging to discover new perspectives or contribute to evolving conversations, which is a core part of what makes text-based social media valuable. But is it completely without merit? I've seen some users manage to carve out niche communities or use it primarily to amplify their Instagram content. If you're using it mainly to cross-post from Instagram or follow a very specific set of creators, you might find some utility. For those hoping for a truly engaging, independent text-based social network with rich discussions and easy discovery, it still feels like it has a long way to go. My advice if you're still debating whether to keep it or hit that 'delete' button? First, try to actively curate your feed. Mute keywords you don't want to see and actively seek out and follow accounts that post content you genuinely enjoy. Engage with posts you like – the algorithm should eventually catch on. Explore the 'Connect and share ideas' aspect by posting your own thoughts and asking questions, rather than just passively consuming. See if you can find some hidden gems or vibrant discussions. However, if after all that effort, it still feels like a 'cesspool' and doesn't offer you the 'Social Networking' experience you're looking for, then perhaps it's time to re-evaluate. There are plenty of other platforms out there, and your time is valuable. For me, the jury is still out, but the 'Open' button on my phone is definitely getting less and less use.

Every post I see is just rage bait or complaining about offhand opinions like “can we stop taking children into grocery stores!” Arguments begin, engagement acquired 🥴 🍪
