Hey everyone! I’m so excited to share my latest craft creation: a super adorable pipe cleaner Spinel! If you're a Steven Universe fan like me, you know how iconic Spinel is, and I just had to try bringing her to life in a fun, tactile way. I’ve always loved working with pipe cleaners – they're so versatile and forgiving, perfect for getting that unique, slightly distorted, cartoonish appearance that makes Spinel so recognizable. When I started this project, I really wanted to capture her whimsical yet melancholic vibe. I focused on getting her signature large eyes and that wide, sometimes unsettling, smile just right. The great thing about pipe cleaners is you can bend and twist them until you get the shape you want. I used mostly pink pipe cleaners for her body, as she's such a vibrant pink stylized figure, and then a few darker ones for details. Here’s a quick rundown of how I approached it, in case you want to try making your own! First, I started with a basic frame for the head. You can twist two pipe cleaners together to form a loop for the head and then extend one down for the neck. For Spinel’s distinctive pigtail-like hair, I twisted several shorter pieces into springy spirals and attached them to the sides of her head, shaping them to give that playful bounce. Next up was the body. I used a thicker bundle of pipe cleaners for the torso, gradually narrowing it for her waist to get that classic hourglass figure. Her long, gangly limbs are perfect for pipe cleaners! Just twist two together for each arm and leg, making sure they’re long enough to give her that exaggerated, rubber-hose animation look. Don't be afraid to make them a bit curvy! The details are where the character truly comes alive. For her large eyes, I cut out small white ovals from paper and drew on her pupils, then glued them onto the pipe cleaner head. For her wide smile, I gently bent a thin black pipe cleaner into an arch and attached it. You can even add little blush marks with a permanent marker if you want! I found that using a bit of hot glue in key areas helped secure everything, especially the hair and limbs, so she could stand up on her own. Making this pipe cleaner Spinel was such a joy. It’s a relatively quick and inexpensive craft, making it perfect for a rainy afternoon or a weekend project.
