Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchaworamahawihan, or Wat Arun or Wat Chaeng, is a Buddhist temple in Thailand. It is a first-class royal temple, Ratchaworamahawihan type, situated on the banks of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok Yai District, Bangkok. It has a long history dating back to the Ayutthaya period. When King Phutthaloetla Naphalai renovated the temple, he bestowed the name "Wat Arun Ratchawararam" as the temple of his reign., The Prang of Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchaworamahawihan is a striking example of Thai architecture. It consists of a 67-meter-tall main prang and four smaller secondary prangs surrounding the four directions. The original prang was built during the Ayutthaya period and was later extended by Kings Phra Phutthaloetla Naphalai and King Nangklao. It is adorned with exquisite glazed tiles and Benjarong bowls. This prang features symbols related to the Traibhumi concept and is considered a replica of Mount Sumeru, a Buddhist landmark, the highest peak in Thailand, stemming from the faith of the Thai people.
Wat Arun Ratchawararam is considered the center of Buddhism, faith, and a significant symbol of Thonburi and Rattanakosin. It houses the Ubosot (ordination hall) enshrining the image of the Buddha in the Mara-Vijaya posture, along with numerous wihans and pagodas. The entrance archway is decorated with giants. At Wat Arun, two giants, Sahasadecha (white-bodied) and Thotsakan (green-bodied), serve as gatekeepers guarding the crowned entrance archway of the Ubosot, protecting the sacred relics within. These guardian deities represent belief and faith, and are a popular destination for tourists from around the world. They offer a fascinating exploration of Thailand's past, present, and future civilizations.
