ตักบาตรเทโว : Tak Bat Devo
Tak Bat Devo
means making merit by offering alms to monks, in commemoration of the Lord Buddha's descent from the heavenly world on Mahapavarana Day, the 15th day of the waxing moon of the 11th month, and his arrival in the human world on the 15th day of the waxing moon of the 11th month. The word Devo comes from the word Devo Rohana (Deva + Orohana), which means descent from the heavenly world.
The original story is that in the seventh year of the rains retreat Since the day of his enlightenment, the Lord Buddha went to reside in the Davadungsa heaven to preach to his mother, who was born as a deva in the Dusit heaven (the fourth heaven). He came down to listen to the Dhamma in the Davadungsa heaven (the second heaven) until she attained Sotapanna (the fruition of the Sotapanna stage). (The reason the Lord Buddha did not go to preach the Dhamma in the Dusit heaven is because the devas in the Davadungsa heaven are unable to ascend to the Dusit heaven due to their lesser power, in order to give those devas the opportunity to listen to the Dhamma.)
When the day of Mahapavarana arrived
(the 15th day of the waxing moon in the 11th month), he descended from the heavenly world at the city of Sankassa. At the time of his descent from the heavenly world
He performed the miracle of the worldview, or opened the three worlds, heaven, human beings, and hell, to be seen together. From Avici Hell to the Brahma world, looking at the main and diagonal directions, hundreds of thousands of universes had the same mound. Devas saw them, humans saw them, and hell beings saw humans, and the devas saw each other. At that moment, the Lord Buddha emitted six-colored rays.
As he descended from the Tavatimsa heaven, today (the 15th day of the waxing moon in the 11th lunar month) has another name: "The day the Lord opened the world."
The next day, the 1st waning day of the 11th lunar month, The townspeople therefore made a great merit by offering alms to the monks, as they had not seen the Lord Buddha for three months. The merit-making ceremony on that day was therefore called Tak Bat The Worohana. Later, the name was shortened to simply Tak Bat Thevo, to commemorate the events of that day. Therefore, Tak Bat Thevo became popular, and it has become a tradition that continues to this day.
Meaning
The word "Devorohana" means the Buddha's descent from the heavenly realm. It is an event of the Buddha's descent. During the seventh rains retreat, he ascended to the heavenly realm of the Tavatimsa to preach the Dharma to his mother. On the day of the great pavarana, he descended from the heavenly realm on the full moon day of the eleventh lunar month. Legend has it that Indra presented three staircases: a golden staircase, a crystal staircase, and a silver staircase. The top of the staircase rests on Mount Sumeru, with the base at the gate of Sankassa City. When he descended, he used the crystal staircase; the devas descended on the golden staircase, and the great Brahmas descended on the silver staircase. This descent is called "Devorohana."
Events in the history of Buddhism
The Buddha regularly preached sermons to the people in Savatthi, which led to a large number of people converting to Buddhism. This led to the decline of heretics. (A heretic is a type of monk who predates Buddhism and is extremely hostile to Buddhism. The Buddha prescribed that if a heretic were to seek ordination in Buddhism, he or she must first undergo training to verify his ordination, a process known as Titthiyaparivasa.)
Offering alms to monks
The day of the Lord Buddha's descent from the Tavatimsa heaven on the full moon day of the 11th lunar month and the alms-giving ceremony took place the following morning. Therefore, the Tak Bat Devo day falls on the 1st waning moon day of the 11th lunar month. In the current Tak Bat Devo festival, alms-giving on this day is unique in that a Buddha image is placed on a vehicle. A person pulls or slowly moves the vehicle ahead of the monks, who then walk in a line to collect alms, following the vehicle containing the Buddha image. Buddhists line up along the roadside, waiting to offer alms in their order. Flags decorate the route used for the alms-giving ceremony. (Currently, the Tak Bat Devo tradition involves offering alms of rice and dried food.)
When the day of Tak Bat Thevo arrives (the 1st waning moon of the 11th lunar month), Buddhists usually go to the temple to make merit by offering alms. The practice is as follows:
1. Prepare breakfast with care to offer to the monks in the early morning of the day of Tak Bat (Thevo) and prepare rice, dried food and other items that can be stored for a long time such as canned fish, medicine, incense sticks and candles in the morning.
2. After giving alms, there is a request for the precepts, taking the precepts, and keeping the precepts.
3. Listen to the Dharma and meditate when possible to purify and clear your mind.
4. Spread loving-kindness and pour water to dedicate merit to relatives, the deceased, and all creatures on this world.
Offering alms to monks is a tradition that Buddhists have practiced since the time of the Buddha. Monks carry alms bowls and go out to collect food or other offerings from villages in the morning. People who come out to offer alms bring food that has been prepared with cleanliness and care, such as rice, side dishes, and dried food to offer to the monks.
The word "Bin-ta-bat" (Pronounced "bin-ta-bat") is a Pali word derived from the words "pinda" and "pat", meaning "the falling of rice grains." The word generally refers to the daily routine of Buddhist monks and novices, who go out with their alms bowls to receive offerings of food or other items from villagers in the morning. This practice, known as "going for alms," has been a part of the daily routine established by the Buddha since his time. The Buddha praised almsgiving as a noble act, or, more commonly, "helping others." This practice is also considered a means of spreading Buddhism. During the Buddha's time, monks would preach to the villagers who came to make merit, which is the origin of the current practice of chanting blessings after meals.
The purpose of giving alms to monks
It is the continuation and maintenance of Buddhism, the accumulation of merit and virtue for oneself, the reduction of stinginess and the promotion of giving alms, the dedication of merit to the deceased, the preservation of the good traditions of Thailand, and the encouragement of monks and novices to survive in this world forever. Buddhism exists because Monks and novices have food to sustain themselves. Offering alms to monks is a way to support them in their survival, to continue to study, practice, and spread the teachings of the Lord Buddha.
Offering alms to monks is considered a Buddhist tradition that has been practiced since the time of the Buddha.
Giving alms by offering food to monks is a way to accumulate merit and virtue that brings happiness in life and is provisions for future travel. It is a good deed that purifies the mind. Offering food to monks is a clever strategy that helps to refine the mind to let go of stinginess and become a person who knows how to sacrifice, give, and share It promotes morality and ethics among people in society, especially by instilling in children the knowledge of giving, sharing, and compassion.
