A rocket refers to a missile, spacecraft, aircraft, or any other vehicle that relies on the thrust of exhaust gases acting on a rocket to propel it forward. It uses the combustion of fuel in a rocket engine. In all types of rockets, the exhaust gases are generated entirely from the propellant carried inside the rocket before it is used. Rockets generate energy from the combustion of rocket fuel. The combustion of fuel and oxidizers within the combustion chamber produces very hot gases that expand and are expelled through the nozzle, causing the gases to move at hypersonic speeds. This creates an enormous thrust on the rocket, according to Newton's third law (action equals reaction). Historically, rockets have been used as weapons and tools in both military and recreational contexts.

Rockets have been used for military and recreational purposes dating back at least to the 13th century in India. Military, scientific, and industrial applications utilized rockets as weapons and tools, but they didn't become widespread until the 20th century, when rocket science emerged, opening the door to the space age and leading to the moon landing. Rockets have been used for fireworks and weapons, pilot seats, and vehicles for launching satellites, astronauts, and planetary exploration. While less efficient rockets are used for low-speed propulsion, scientists are searching for lighter, more efficient alternative thrust systems to create greater acceleration and achieve extremely high speeds with optimal performance., Chemical rockets are the most common type of rocket, and they typically generate exhaust by combusting rocket fuel. Chemical rockets require massive fuel storage in a form that is readily and dangerously self-releasing. However, this must be done with careful design, testing, construction, and with minimal risk.

Timeline of Rockets and Ballistic Technology: The first gunpowder-powered rockets were developed in medieval China under the Song dynasty. In the 13th century, the Mongols adopted Chinese rocket technology, and this technology spread through the Mongol invasions into the Middle East and Europe in the mid-13th century. The readily available black powder (gunpowder) was used to propel projectiles, an early development of solid-fuel rockets. Rocket technology began as early as the 9th century AD with the discovery of black powder by a Chinese Taoist hermit who found it while searching for a cure for immortality. This accidental discovery led to experiments in creating weapons such as bombs, cannons, fire arrows for insurgency, and rocket-propelled fire arrows. The discovery of gunpowder was a product of centuries of alchemical experimentation in Teochew, where alchemists attempted to create an elixir of immortality (panacea) that would grant physical immortality to those who consumed it.

It was around this time that the first rocket flights occurred, leading to a competition. The problem was whether the Chinese fire arrows could be either arrows with attached explosives or arrows propelled by gunpowder. Reports of fire arrows and iron pots could be heard as far as 25 kilometers (15 miles) away when they exploded upon impact, causing destruction within a 600-meter (2,000-foot) radius, largely due to shrapnel. The first documented use of these weapons in combat is attributed to the Chinese in 1232 against the Mongol army at Kai Feng Fu. However, smaller versions of iron pots may have been used as a means for armies to encircle invaders. Academic records state that in 998 AD, a man named Tang Fu equipped a new type of fire arrow with an iron head—either an arrow attached with an explosive or one propelled by gunpowder, similar to the Korean branch weapon (Hwacha).

Gunpowder-powered rockets were first developed during the Song Dynasty in China. In the mid-13th century, Chinese rocket technology was adopted by the Mongols, and this invention spread during the Mongol invasions of the Middle East and Europe in the mid-13th century. Rockets are recorded as being used in the Song navy during military exercises in 1245. Internal combustion rocket propulsion is mentioned in a document from 1264, which records that a 'ground-rat,' a type of firework, impressed the Empress., Empress Mother Gongsheng was shocked at a banquet held in her honor by her own son, Emperor Lizong. Later, rockets were included in a military treatise called Huolongjing, also known as the Fire Drake Manual.

The spread of rocket technology: Rocket technology was first introduced to Europeans by the Mongol emperors Genghis Khan and Ögedei Khan when they conquered parts of eastern Russia and central Europe. The Mongols acquired the technology from the Chinese through their conquests in northern China and by hiring Chinese rocket specialists as mercenaries for the Mongol army. Reports from the Battle of Mohi in 1241 describe the use of rocket weapons by Mongol soldiers against the Magyars.17) Rocket technology also spread to Korea in the 15th century, with the use of "hwachs" (right-wheel legs) to launch rockets, known as "Singijeon." Furthermore, the spread of rocket technology also entered Europe under the influence of the Ottoman Empire during its siege of Constantinople in 1453.

Although it's highly probable that the Ottomans themselves were influenced by earlier Mongol invasions just a few centuries prior, the history of rockets has been widely publicized on the internet. NASA states that "rockets appear in Arabic literature as early as 1258, describing the Mongol invasion on February 15th to capture Baghdad." Between 1270 and 1280, Hasan al-Rammah wrote al-furusiyyah wa al-manasib al-harbiyya (Book of the Art of Horsemanship and Ingenious War Devices), which included 107 gunpowder recipes, 22 of which were for rockets.

Accuracy of early rockets

William Congreve, son of an inspector at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich, London, became a key figure in this field. From 1801, Congreve researched designs that would later become prototypes of Mysore rockets, and based on a rigorous development program at the Royal Arsenal laboratories, he formulated new rocket fuel mixtures and developed rockets with strong steel tubes and conical nozzles. These early Congreve rockets weighed approximately 32 pounds (14.5 kilograms). The Royal Arsenal demonstrated solid-fuel rockets in 1805. Rockets were used effectively during the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812. Congreve published three books on rocket science.

The military use of rockets then spread to the Western Hemisphere. At the Battle of Baltimore in 1814, the rockets that struck Fort McHenry from the rocket vessel HMS Erebus (40), the Greek mythological figure of darkness (41), were the source of the rocket's bright red flash of light described by Francis Scott Key in *The Star Spangled Banner*. Rockets were also used at the Battle of Waterloo.

Early rockets were not very accurate, relying not on gimballing (the spinning of the compass ring) generated by rocket thrust for propulsion. They tended to rapidly change direction from their intended target. Early Mysorean rockets and later British Congreve rockets were improved by attaching a long rod to the tail of the rocket (similar to modern-day bottle rockets) to make it more difficult to alter its trajectory. The largest Congreve rockets had a 32-pound (14.5 kg) rod, 15 feet (4.6 m) long. Originally mounted on the side, it was later moved to the center of the rocket, reducing drag and improving accuracy during launch from the launch tube.

The problem of rocket accuracy was greatly improved in 1844 when William Hale modified the rocket design so that the thrust vector was slightly upward, causing the rocket to spin along its axis of motion like a bullet. Hale's rocket therefore did not need a long thrust vector to maintain direction during flight, resulting in more fluid motion due to reduced air resistance, although it was still far from highly accurate.

ปัญหาเรื่องความแม่นย่าของจรวดได้รับการปรับปรุงอย่างมากในปี 1844 เมื่อวิลเลียม เซล (William Hale) ได้แก้ไขการออกแบบจรวดเพื่อที่ ว่าจรวดจะได้มีเวกเตอร์แรงขับดันขึ้นเล็กน้อย (slightly vectored), ทําให้จรวดเกิดการปั่นหมุนตามแกนของทิศทางการเคลื่อนที่เหมือนกับกระสุน จรวดของเซลจึงไม่มีความจำเป็นต้องใช้แห่งยาวเพื่อรักษาทิศทางในขณะเคลื่อนที่ของจรวดแต่อย่างใด, ทำให้การเคลื่อนที่ของจรวดมีความคล่อง ตัวมากขึ้นเนื่องจากแรงด้านของอากาศที่ลดลงแต่ก็ยังห่างไกลจากความแม่นย่ามากอยู่ดี.
