Hey everyone! So, I finally took the plunge and did my very first microloc self-retie, and I wanted to share my experience and tips for all my fellow beginners out there. When I started my microloc journey, the idea of doing my own reties felt super intimidating. But after research and a desire to save money and learn more about my hair, I decided to try. And guess what? You can totally do it too! Why I Decided to Self-Retie My Microlocs For me, it came down to cost and convenience. Salon reties add up, especially with microlocs needing frequent maintenance. Learning to self-retie offers flexibility and is incredibly empowering, helping me understand my hair's needs better. What You'll Need for Your Self-Retie Get your essentials ready before you start! Small Crochet Hook (0.5mm - 0.75mm): Crucial for interlocking. Sectioning Clips: To keep your hair organized. Spray Bottle with Water or Light Leave-in: For damp, manageable hair. A Good Mirror (and a handheld one): Essential for seeing all angles. Comfortable Seating: You’ll be here for a while! Getting Started: The 'Before' Prep Always start with preparation. I like clean, dry hair to easily see new growth. I section off my hair into quadrants, then work with smaller sections. Take a good look at your locs "Before" you start – observe the new growth, any thinning, or locs needing extra attention. This visual check helps plan your approach. My Step-by-Step Microloc Retie Process Here’s how I tackled my first self-retie using the interlocking method with my crochet hook: Isolate a Loc: Pick one loc from your section. Ensure new growth is clearly defined. Assess New Growth: You should have at least an inch of new growth. Too short makes interlocking difficult and can cause tension. The Interlock: Using your small crochet hook (or fingers), you’ll pass the end of the loc through the base of the new growth. For beginners, a simple 4-point rotation is often easiest: Pass the loc end through new growth from top to bottom. Then from right to left. Next, from bottom to top. Finally, from left to right. The goal is to create a secure, consistent pattern that incorporates new growth without bulges or too much tension. Imagine weaving the new growth into the existing loc using your Crochets. Check for Tension: After each pass, gently tug. It should feel secure but not painfully tight. We want healthy crolocs, not damaged ones! Repeat, Repeat, Repeat: Patience is key! Work systematically. Take breaks. The "After" feeling of accomplishment is worth it! Beginner Tips I Learned Along the Way Patience is Key: Rushing leads to mistakes and potential damage. Don't Over-Tighten: Super important! Too much tension causes thinning, breakage, and traction alopecia. Your scalp shouldn't feel sore. Mind Your Sections: Clean, consistent sections maintain neat microlocs. Observe Your Locs: Pay attention to growth, thickness, and changes. It's all about learning your hair.
