Found this rusty metal bathroom shelf on the side of the road…

After a deep clean, and a fresh coat of paint, it’s completely transformed.

I once found an old shelf discarded by the roadside and decided to give it new life. After thoroughly cleaning the rust with a wire brush and rust remover, I applied a primer to prevent further oxidation. Using black spray paint was a game changer — it provided a sleek, modern finish that contrasts beautifully with the natural tones of the wood. In addition to the metal frame, I crafted three shelf surfaces from birch plywood, which I cut to size and sanded smooth for a clean look. Staining the wood with Minwax Special Walnut brought out the richness and grain, complementing the black metal frame perfectly. Applying two coats ensured durability against bathroom humidity. Finally, assembling the shelves back onto the frame felt rewarding, as what was once a rusty scrap transformed into a functional and stylish piece. This project is not only eco-friendly by upcycling but also customizable — you can choose different paint colors or wood finishes to match your bathroom’s aesthetic. Plus, it’s a great weekend DIY that requires minimal tools but yields maximum style and storage improvement.
