Our Elf on the Shelf came into our lives 6 years ago and I’ve regretted it ever since.
We brought Sprinkles into our lives because our now 12 year old thought she wasn’t being “good enough” to get an elf. She said everyone else at school had one and she thought she didn’t have one because she was too naughty.
We tried to tell her she was so well-behaved she didn’t need one, but eventually got her one. She was overjoyed.
Every year since, my husband and I have dreaded December. We hate moving the elf at night after we’ve worked a full day and used all our energy to keep our kids alive and healthy. We often have a reminder set to “move the f***ing elf”.
Now don’t get me wrong. I love the magic of Christmas. I love the spiritual magic, the Santa magic and truly believe it’s a time to be together.
This year we decided to semi-retire our elf. We came up with a letter that explains why Sprinkles isn’t coming this year and actually made it a bad thing if the kids see her.
Hoping this works and we can have the elf phased out by the end of next season 🩵🎄
... Read moreThe tradition of Elf on the Shelf can bring excitement to the holiday season, but it can also be draining for parents. Many families find themselves exhausted from the nightly ritual of moving the elf. In this article, I share our decision to semi-retire our elf, Sprinkles, by creating a new narrative that allows us to shift the focus from constant surveillance to enjoying family time.
For those considering a similar change, crafting a letter from Santa can help manage children's expectations, explaining that the elf is needed elsewhere and will only check in occasionally. This method can ease the pressure while maintaining the magic of the holiday. Furthermore, it allows families to reclaim some of December's joy, focusing on making memories rather than adhering to elf-related duties.
It's important to communicate openly with children, explaining that the love of Christmas remains even without the elf. Finding new traditions that emphasize togetherness can also enrich the holiday experience. Whether it's baking, story-telling, or engaging in charitable activities, shifting the focus from the elf's antics to deeper family connections can transform the holiday spirit. Embracing a more relaxed approach might just be the best decision for your family this season!
