Forget the frozen versions; making a Salisbury steak from scratch is surprisingly quick, affordable, and tastes infinitely better, just like those nostalgic meals we loved as kids. This recipe is my absolute go-to for a comforting, easy dinner that satisfies everyone. My Go-To Easy Salisbury Steak Recipe For the Patties: 1 lb ground beef (80/20 works great for flavor) 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (panko or regular) 1/4 cup finely chopped onion (or 1 tbsp onion powder) 1 large egg 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1/2 tsp garlic powder Salt and black pepper to taste For the Gravy: 2 tbsp olive oil or butter 1 large onion, sliced (optional, but adds so much flavor!) 8 oz sliced mushrooms (optional, but highly recommended) 2 tbsp all-purpose flour 2 cups beef broth 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp Dijon mustard (secret ingredient for depth!) Salt and pepper to taste Instructions: Make the Patties: In a large bowl, gently combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion (if using fresh), egg, 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Don't overmix! Form into 4-6 oval-shaped patties, about 3/4-inch thick. Sear the Patties: Heat the olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and sear for 3-4 minutes per side, until nicely browned. You don't need to cook them through at this stage. Remove patties and set aside. Sauté Aromatics (Optional but Recommended): In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and mushrooms (if using). Cook until softened and lightly browned, scraping up any delicious browned bits from the pan. Make the Gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the onions and mushrooms (or directly into the pan if you skipped the aromatics) and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly, to create a roux. Simmer: Gradually whisk in the beef broth, 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard. Bring to a simmer, stirring occasionally, until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency. Combine & Finish: Return the seared Salisbury steak patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and tender. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. The Best Side Dishes for Salisbury Steak What's a Salisbury steak without its perfect partners? For me, it absolutely has to be creamy Mashed Potatoes – they're a total classic and soak up that amazing gravy perfectly! I love to whip mine up with a generous knob of butter, a splash of warm milk, and a pinch of garlic powder until they're super fluffy. And for a pop of color and freshness, perfectly steamed Green beans are a must. Sometimes I'll toss them with a little butter and a sprinkle of toasted almonds for an extra touch. It truly completes the 'TV DINNER' experience, but elevated and homemade! Other fantastic options include buttery egg noodles, roasted carrots, or even a simple side salad to cut through the richness. These sides make it a complete, satisfying meal that beats any 'Swanson's Salisbury Steak' hands down. This recipe truly captures that classic taste without all the fuss. It's been my go-to for years, especially when I need a delicious, hearty meal that doesn't break the bank or take forever to cook. Enjoy!
