Ikigai

During my struggle with depression, I often questioned my existence and purpose in life. A few days ago, while exploring Netflix's culinary shows, I discovered 'Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones,' which I highly recommend. The first episode, set in Okinawa, introduced me to the concept of Ikigai.

Ikigai is a Japanese philosophy that suggests every individual has a unique purpose or reason for living, translating to 'a reason for being.' Since then, I've noticed the passion people express for their crafts—whether cooking or running a business—on social media and YouTube, showcasing pride in their work.

Asking questions has significantly aided my progress, and I’ve been reflecting on my own Ikigai.

What is something I love so deeply that it feels effortless?

What is my reason for being?

... Read moreSince discovering the concept of Ikigai, I've been fascinated by how it's often understood differently across cultures. While the core idea of 'a reason for being' or 'the happiness of always being busy' (as it's sometimes translated) remains, its practical application can vary. In the West, many of us encounter Ikigai through the popular Venn diagram, which beautifully illustrates the intersection of what you love, what you're good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for. It's a fantastic framework for career or major life path introspection, helping to visualize that sweet spot where passion meets purpose and practicality. However, the traditional Japanese understanding of Ikigai, especially in places like Okinawa (which the original article mentions!), often emphasizes something more subtle and deeply ingrained in daily life. It's less about a grand, singular life purpose and more about finding joy and fulfillment in the small, everyday actions. It could be the meticulous care you put into your garden, the warmth you feel while sharing a meal with loved ones, or the satisfaction of mastering a craft. It's about living authentically and finding contentment in the present moment, rather than constantly striving for a distant goal. This perspective helps alleviate some of the 'anxieties about the unknown' that many of us face when thinking about our future. It teaches us to appreciate the journey as much as the destination. Reflecting on my own journey, I’ve found that instead of feeling pressured to find one massive Ikigai, it’s more about identifying those smaller, consistent sources of joy and meaning. It's about asking myself, 'What activities make me lose track of time?' or 'What problems do I genuinely enjoy trying to solve?' Often, the answers aren't tied to a paycheck but to a sense of contribution or personal growth. For example, helping a friend with a tricky problem, learning a new skill just for the sake of it, or even just taking a quiet walk in nature can be powerful sources of Ikigai. To truly embrace this philosophy, I'd suggest taking a moment each day to notice what brings you genuine satisfaction. It doesn't have to be monumental. It could be the aroma of your morning coffee, a meaningful conversation, or the sense of accomplishment after completing a small task. By acknowledging these moments, you start to weave a tapestry of purpose into your everyday existence. It’s a gentle reminder that happiness isn't just a destination; it's woven into the fabric of our lives, waiting to be discovered in the simplest of ways. This approach helps in navigating the complexities of life by providing a stable foundation of personal meaning, helping us find happiness even amidst challenges.
