Weird things that happened to me at work pt. 102

Okay, so you read my little snippet about the Deli incident, and trust me, that was just the tip of the iceberg of what ran through my mind! When the 'Karen' insisted on 'Johnny' (who was literally 5 or 6!) telling us his order, and the Deli was absolutely PACKED with the line wrapping around the ENTIRE STORE, I just wanted to disappear. My colleague kept trying to politely say, 'Hey ma'am, I'm so sorry, we're really busy right now, could you please tell us what you ordered?' But she was relentless. It felt like an eternity. The pressure from the other customers in the line was palpable. You could feel their impatience, and honestly, I was right there with them. I remember thinking, 'Is this woman serious?' The poor kid, Johnny, clearly didn't want to play along, he just wanted his food, I guess. The OCR even caught that part where she said, 'NO! He's gonna do it!' and then threatened to count to three! My heart just sank for the little guy. I think the best (or worst) part was when she refused to budge, and I had to deliver the line, 'Ma'am, if you don't tell me the line is gonna yell at you! They don't play!!' It wasn't a threat, it was a genuine warning! The people waiting were getting restless, muttering under their breath. Eventually, a manager had to step in, and the 'Karen' finally, grudgingly, gave her order. The sigh of relief from everyone, including us behind the counter, was almost audible. Dealing with such unprofessional behavior at work from customers is truly draining. It's one of those strange happenings in the office (or in this case, the deli) that makes you question humanity. How do you maintain a professional demeanor when someone is actively trying to make your job harder, and in such a public way? I've learned a few things from these kinds of encounters. First, try to de-escalate calmly, even when you're fuming inside. Second, know when to call for backup – a manager stepping in can often diffuse a situation quicker than you trying to reason with an unreasonable person. Third, don't take it personally. It's often not about you, but about their own issues. This incident in Houston really stuck with me. It’s not just about difficult customers; sometimes, 'unprofessional behavior' can come from colleagues or even management, creating a truly toxic work environment. I've heard stories about colleagues constantly gossiping, or managers playing favorites, leading to a lot of frustration. These work problems can really impact your mental health. So, what do you do when faced with these strange happenings in the office? My go-to strategy now is to document everything if it's a recurring issue, and if it's really bad, talk to HR or a trusted supervisor. Sometimes, just having a support system at work, people who can commiserate with you, makes a huge difference. Because honestly, some of the stuff we deal with at work, you just can't make up!
