Try some cross mountain climbers on the Bosu

2025/1/27 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, so you've heard about or tried Bosu mountain climbers, right? Seriously, they're a total game-changer for your core. When I first started adding them to my routine, I was amazed at how much more engaged my abs felt compared to regular mountain climbers. The instability of the Bosu dome forces all those tiny stabilizing muscles to work overtime, which means a stronger, more functional core. Let me break down how I do my cross mountain climbers on the Bosu and some tips I’ve picked up. You want to place your hands on the flat side of the Bosu, gripping the edges, or if you're going for extra challenge, place your hands on the dome. I usually go for the flat side down, dome up, with my hands firmly planted on the dome. Get into a strong plank position, shoulders directly over your wrists. Now, here’s the cross part: instead of bringing your knee straight to your chest, aim your right knee towards your left elbow, then your left knee towards your right elbow. Keep your core super tight, hips stable, and try not to let your body sway. It’s not about speed; it’s about control and engaging those obliques! I usually aim for 3 sets of 15-20 reps on each side. Trust me, you'll feel the burn in all the right places – your abs, obliques, and even your shoulders get a workout. It’s an incredible way to boost both your core strength and cardio endurance without leaving the mat. But wait, there's another level of Bosu challenge that's been on my mind and that I've been experimenting with: the Bosu ball handstand! Now, I'll be honest, this isn't for total beginners, and safety is key. I actually started my handstand journey against a wall on the floor before even thinking about the Bosu. The idea here is to add an insane amount of instability, pushing your balance and shoulder strength to their absolute limits. When I first attempted it, I started by just placing my hands on the flat side of the Bosu (dome up), getting into a pike position, and trying to hold that. It’s humbling! The Bosu wobbles like crazy, demanding every muscle in your forearms, shoulders, and core to fire up. My progression has been slow but rewarding. I started by doing pike handstands with my feet elevated on a box, hands on the Bosu. Then, I moved to kicking up against a wall, but with my hands on the Bosu. The sensation is completely different – you have to actively press down into the dome to maintain stability, which builds incredible proprioception. It's not just about strength; it's about body awareness. If you're considering this, PLEASE make sure you have a solid handstand foundation on flat ground first, and ideally, have a spotter or practice near a wall. The feeling of finally holding even a few seconds on the Bosu is electrifying. It’s an amazing way to challenge your entire upper body, balance, and mental focus. If you're looking to truly elevate your bodyweight training, the Bosu offers endless possibilities beyond just cardio or basic core work. Give these a try and let me know how it goes!
