Not pretty
Okay, so you saw the title, '255 FOR 3, BUT IT WASN'T PRETTY.' And honestly, that sums up my bench press session perfectly. I hit a new rep PR – 255 pounds for three solid reps – but let me tell you, my form was absolutely horrendous on that last rep. It was a grind, a total fight against gravity, and probably looked like something out of a blooper reel. I've been working towards this number for a while. Bench press has always been a love-hate relationship for me. Some days I feel like I'm flying, other days the bar feels like it's glued to the rack. Today, I walked into the gym feeling strong, but also a little apprehensive. My warm-up sets felt good, but as I loaded up the plates for 255, a tiny voice in my head started whispering doubts. My first rep felt surprisingly smooth. Exploded off the chest, locked it out clean. 'Alright, I've got this!' I thought. Second rep, a little slower, but still controlled. Then came the third. As the bar descended, I could feel my triceps screaming for mercy. The ascent was a slow-motion battle. My elbows flared, my hips came off the bench a little (definitely not ideal!), and I had to push harder than I have in a long time. It was an ugly, ugly rep. My spotter was right there, his hands hovering, ready to jump in, and I could practically feel his energy willing the bar up. I barely, barely locked it out, and the relief mixed with a twinge of embarrassment was palpable. After racking the weight, I just lay there for a moment, catching my breath. On one hand, I hit the reps! A new PR! On the other, my form completely broke down. It wasn't the clean, controlled lift I aspire to. This experience really hammered home the importance of technique, even when chasing numbers. Sometimes, it's easy to get caught up in the ego lift, pushing for heavier weights or more reps even when your body is telling you to back off. What did I learn from this 'not pretty' bench press session? Firstly, celebrating the wins, no matter how messy they are, is crucial for motivation. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, I need to dedicate more time to accessory work targeting my triceps and shoulder stability. My form breakdown pointed directly to weaknesses that need addressing. I'm going to deload slightly next week, focus purely on perfect form, and maybe incorporate some close-grip bench and overhead tricep extensions. For anyone out there chasing their own bench press goals, don't be afraid to push your limits, but always listen to your body. Sometimes, a "not pretty" lift is a stepping stone to a stronger, more controlled future. It’s part of the journey, and every struggle teaches you something valuable. Keep grinding, and remember, progress isn't always linear, and it definitely isn't always picture-perfect!
