For the past 5 years my dream was to be a paramedic and I’ll never give up.

2025/7/26 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! So many of you have asked about my paramedic study routine, and I’m thrilled to share some of my most crucial notes and insights from my journey to becoming an EMT. It’s a challenging path, but with focused study and hands-on practice, it’s absolutely achievable. My dream felt so far away at times, but diving into these details truly helps. One of the most intense topics we cover is Needle Thoracocentesis. This is a life-saving procedure, and understanding it perfectly is non-negotiable. My notes emphasize that it's indicated for tension pneumothorax, which is a medical emergency where air gets trapped in the chest cavity, compressing the lung and heart. Key indications include severe respiratory distress, hypotension, tracheal deviation, and absent breath sounds on the affected side. Always remember the contraindications too – if classic signs of tension pneumothorax aren't present, you need to reassess! The procedure involves inserting a needle into the second intercostal space at the midclavicular line, or the fifth intercostal space at the midaxillary line. It’s all about rapid decompression to relieve pressure. Speaking of Tension Pneumothorax, recognizing its features quickly is vital. We learn to look for a sudden onset of chest pain, shortness of breath, rapid heart rate, and low blood pressure. The equipment needed for needle decompression is quite specific: a large bore needle (like a 14-gauge or 10-gauge), an angiocatheter, and sometimes a one-way valve. Practice with a medical training mannequin has been invaluable for getting comfortable with the exact angles and depths. Pediatric patients require extra caution and specialized knowledge. My notes on needle sizes and insertion precautions for children are always highlighted. Their anatomy is different, and what works for an adult can be dangerous for a child. For example, understanding proper dosages and equipment modifications is paramount. Safety is always the first priority, especially with our smallest patients. Beyond these critical interventions, everyday practical skills are equally important. I’ve learned so much about the nuances of patient assessment and care from OSCE GUIDES, which really help solidify the steps for patient interaction and consent. For instance, removing transdermal medication patches and thoroughly cleaning the skin before placing an AED pad is a small detail that can prevent thermal burns – something you might not think of immediately but is crucial for patient safety. And when it comes to chest compressions on a small child, proper hand placement and depth are completely different from an adult. We spend hours practicing these scenarios on our training mannequins to build muscle memory. My journey has been filled with countless hours of studying, practical simulations, and learning from experienced paramedics. It’s more than just mastering procedures; it’s about critical thinking and applying knowledge under pressure. Every day, I’m getting closer to my goal, and these detailed notes are my roadmap. I hope sharing these insights gives you a clearer picture of what goes into becoming a paramedic and inspires anyone else on a similar path!
