“What Happened When I Got To L.A.” - INTRO

A few weeks ago, I wrapped up my 8-part comic series, “How I Got to L.A.”, which told the story of how a slightly lost, overly ambitious composer from Toronto somehow ended up at USC chasing her dream career.

Well...

This is the sequel.

Good news: I made it to California.

Bad news: I also came with me.

Welcome to “What Happened When I Got to L.A.”, a series about what happened after the dream came true.

(As it turns out, personal growth is slightly more complicated than changing postal codes.)

If you'd like to start at the beginning, I've made the entire series into a collection on my Patreon for free. See the link in bio! <3

I had left behind a competitive and at times insecure life in Toronto, and I wanted to be different. I envisioned myself as everyone's cheerleader, the sunshine person, always positive and thriving. The initial excitement of chasing my dream career at USC as a composer was intoxicating, and I truly believed that a change of postal code would magically solve all my problems. But as my new comic series will explore, personal growth is far more complicated than simply changing your address. The truth is, I came to California, but I also came with myself – and all the unresolved issues I thought I could outrun. One of the biggest reality checks was the financial strain. While pursuing my passion, income wasn't stable, and those unpaid credit cards from my Toronto life quickly became pressing "loose ends." It’s hard to be the sunshine when you’re constantly worried about bills. Emotionally, things were also tougher than I’d anticipated. There were moments described in my comics where I was curled up on the bathroom floor, experiencing panic attacks. I had been pushing my problems into an emotional storage locker, thinking that if I just focused on the new, exciting chapter, the old baggage would disappear. It didn't. Instead, it surfaced in unexpected ways, making me realize that running away from a life heading toward a cliff meant I still had to deal with the inner turmoil. This journey from trying to be an idealized version of myself to facing these raw, vulnerable moments is a core part of the story. Through it all, there were glimmers of hope and genuine fun with friends, making me feel momentarily figured out and grateful. But the underlying challenges prompted a deeper introspection. This series isn't just about the external events; it’s about what truly happens inside when you achieve a long-held dream, only to find that the biggest work still lies ahead. It’s about the messy, sometimes uncomfortable, but ultimately transformative process of confronting your past and truly growing into the person you're meant to be, even amidst the palm trees and sunshine of LA. Join me as I share the honest, unvarnished story of my real life in LA, beyond the dream.
