I made this little paint study page to help myself understand how water changes the texture, thickness, and transparency of gouache!

• Butter consistency → thickest + most opaque
• Heavy cream → smooth and creamy
• Milk → softer color with visible brush strokes
• Water → transparent wash effect
💡 Viscosity = how thick or thin the paint feels
💡 Opacity = how transparent or solid the paint appears
The blue swatches on the side helped me actually SEE the difference instead of just reading about it in a textbook.

When I first started experimenting with gouache, I found it tricky to control the paint’s appearance on paper, especially regarding how solid or translucent the colors looked. This is perfect when you want smooth gradients or subtle color shifts. I was surprised at how adding more water, to reach the 'milk' consistency, changes the look drastically: brush strokes become visible, adding texture and softness. It's especially useful when painting natural elements like skies or fabrics, where you want both color and brush pattern to show. Finally, diluting gouache with a lot of water creates a transparent wash effect similar to watercolor. This 'water' consistency lets you build delicate layers or backgrounds without overpowering the painting. Creating a visual reference with blue swatches side-by-side really helped me compare how paint opacity decreased as viscosity lowered, making it easier to choose the right consistency for different painting effects. If you’re a beginner, I highly recommend making your own chart like this; it turns theoretical concepts into tangible results and speeds up the learning process.
