As a local adventurer, I recently dove deeper into the lore surrounding Denton's famous Goatman's Bridge, officially known as the Old Alton Bridge. Most people flock here for the chilling tale of the Goatman. Legend has it, in the late 1930s, a successful Black goat farmer named Oscar Washburn, known as the 'Goat Man,' was lynched by the KKK on this very bridge. His body was thrown over the side, but when they looked down, it was gone. They say his spirit, half-man, half-goat, now haunts the bridge, protecting his land and seeking vengeance. Others talk of strange lights, disembodied voices, and even a goat-like creature with glowing eyes appearing after dark. It's no wonder shows like Ghost Adventures have visited, trying to capture evidence of the paranormal! Visiting the Old Alton Bridge at night is an experience in itself. The air grows thick with anticipation as darkness falls. The red metal truss bridge, with its weathered appearance and graffiti-covered beams, takes on an eerie glow under the moon. Walking across the old wooden deck, with the red metal railings on either side, every creak and rustle seems amplified. You can almost feel the presence of past visitors, or perhaps something more… When I went, I heard unexplained whispers and felt an odd chill, even though the night wasn't particularly cold. It's definitely a place that plays with your imagination. Beyond the spooky stories, the bridge is surrounded by scenic trails. During the day, it's a peaceful spot for hiking and enjoying nature, a stark contrast to its nighttime persona. You can explore the wooded areas where that old, graffiti-covered metal staircase stands. It's fascinating to think about all the history this area holds. If you plan to visit, especially at night, here are a few tips from my experience: bring a good flashlight (or two!), wear comfortable shoes for the trails, and go with friends. Parking can be found nearby, and remember to respect the historical nature of the site. Whether you're a skeptic or a true believer, Goatman's Bridge offers a uniquely thrilling outing in Denton.
