Water and electronics do not mix well!
If you own or are working on a newer style RAV4(2019+) and you have an electrical issue that just doesn’t make sense. Remove both driver and passenger side kick panel and inspect the connectors for corrosion. Corrosion can short out system causing all sorts of electrical issues. This corrosion forms due the roof rails leaking water inside the car which will cause the water to get inside these connectors. If the roof rails are leaking there is a customer support program that Toyota offers that helps address this issue so make sure to check out your local dealership and consult with them about the problem you are experiencing.

I remember seeing a mechanic's image of an electrical connector with white and green corrosion inside, and it looked exactly like what I found in my own car. Sometimes, you might even spot blue and green corrosion on the pins, a tell-tale sign of copper oxidizing due to moisture. So, where do you start looking? Beyond the specific kick panel areas I mentioned for RAV4s, common spots for electrical corrosion include areas exposed to the elements or prone to moisture accumulation. Think under the dashboard, near door sills, in the engine bay, and under seats if water has seeped in. Always check wiring harnesses that run along the floor or through fender wells. A good flashlight and a small mirror can be your best friends for inspecting hard-to-reach connectors. When I saw my car with a stripped down car interior, exposing all the wiring harnesses, it really drove home how extensive these systems are and how many potential points of failure exist. If you find mild corrosion, don't panic immediately, but act fast. For surface-level issues on easily accessible connectors, you might be able to carefully clean it yourself. Always disconnect the battery first! Use a specialized electrical contact cleaner and a small, non-abrasive brush (like a toothbrush). Gently scrub away the corrosion. For more stubborn cases, or if the corrosion is deep within the connector or on sensitive electronic components, it's always best to consult a professional. They have the tools and expertise to safely repair or replace damaged parts without causing further issues. Preventing corrosion is always better than fixing it. After dealing with my RAV4's roof leak, I've become super vigilant. Regularly check your car for any signs of water leaks, especially around sunroofs, windows, and windshields. Ensure all rubber seals are intact and pliable. If your car has been exposed to significant moisture, like after heavy rain or driving through deep puddles, try to ensure the interior dries out completely to prevent moisture from lingering and causing future issues. A little proactive inspection can save you a huge headache and costly repairs down the road!
