Chasing My Dream of Becoming a Pharmacist at 27 💊✨
In 2017, I moved to the States and landed a job at Walgreens. It was there, after being promoted to the pharmacy and becoming a certified pharmacy tech, that I fell in love with the field. The science of medicine fascinated me, and I realized I wanted to become a pharmacist. But life had other plans.
My dream faced its first hurdle when my dad refused to let me use his tax returns to apply for FAFSA. This setback led me to drop out of college during my first semester to focus on work and build my business to make ends meet. I put my dream on hold, and as the years went by, I often felt like I was too old to start again, convincing myself I should have begun at 19 or 20. I forgot to consider that my circumstances weren’t my fault.
For almost eight years, I remained a pharmacy tech, contemplating other career paths like joining the Air Force or studying sonography. However, in the back of my mind, I always envisioned myself as a pharmacist. Now, at 27, I’ve decided it’s time to chase that dream! 🎉 I’ll begin my prerequisites in August, aiming to finish in two years. After that, I plan to apply for a PharmD/Master’s in Public Health program. Why not go big or go home, right? 😂
I used to worry about my age and the length of the program, but I realized that time keeps moving. Remember COVID? That was five years ago, and it feels like yesterday! I’d rather be 33 with two degrees than stuck in a career I settled for. One thing’s for sure, though retail has ruined retail for me! 🤣🤣 I have no interest in becoming a retail pharmacist. My goal is INDUSTRY!! Think FDA, clinical trials, CDC, or drug regulatory affairs, something more aligned with my interests.
Recently, I spoke to a pharmacist who didn’t realize she wanted to go to pharmacy school until she was almost 30, and it hit me, I’m not too old to pursue my dreams! Sure, starting right out of high school would have been great, but life happens.
OAN, one pharmacist warned me about the struggles of organic chemistry. She said imma be losing weight and crying!😅 Anyone else survive that? I wanna know what I’m walking into.🤣
Anyway, I’m excited and ready for this next chapter. I know it won’t be easy balancing work and school, but I’m determined to put in the hard work now for a better future.
