I didn’t realize my own bathroom was triggering me until I changed it.

3/24 Edited to

... Read moreRecognizing that a familiar space like a bathroom can become a trigger for trauma is an important step toward healing. In my own experience, I found that certain parts of my bathroom were associated with overwhelming feelings, almost like PTSD symptoms flaring up. I used to force myself to endure those moments, but with time, I realized that the space itself was contributing to my distress. What helped me the most was reimagining the bathroom not just as a functional room, but as a sanctuary—a place where safety and calm should prevail. I started small, removing items and colors that subconsciously reminded me of difficult times. Replacing harsh lighting with softer tones and adding comforting textures and plants significantly changed the energy. The concept of dopamine decorating—designing spaces that encourage positive emotional responses—was especially effective. Incorporating gentle colors, meaningful décor, and keeping clutter to a minimum helped me feel grounded. This transformation wasn't simply about aesthetic improvements but about creating a mental refuge that supported my sobriety and trauma recovery journey. This process reinforced how environmental triggers can deeply affect mental health and recovery. If you find any space in your home triggering, try listening to your feelings about what needs to change. Sometimes, the key to healing lies in taking control over your surroundings to foster safety and peace. Creating a safe place helped me reclaim a part of my daily routine, reducing anxiety and empowering me to continue my healing journey with courage and optimism.
