Day 26 of the June Summer Reading Challenge for Kids
This 90s classroom ritual still hits.
Drop Everything And Read isn’t just cute. It’s powerful.
If you grew up in the 90s, you already know.
DEAR time was the moment when the whole class stopped what they were doing, grabbed a book, and just read. No tests. No pressure. Just reading for the love of it.
And now… we’re bringing it back.
Because sometimes the best traditions deserve a revival. Especially the ones that help build lifelong readers.
Today’s Challenge:
Call out “DEAR time!” and have your child grab a book and drop wherever they are: on the floor, on the couch, in the middle of play and read for 10 minutes.
Let them feel what it’s like to slow down and just enjoy a good book. That’s what builds readers for life.
If you’re still in the challenge with me, I’m sending you a virtual hug because we’re almost at the finish line!
The DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) tradition from the 90s is more than just a nostalgic memory; it's a powerful tool for fostering a love of reading in children. This practice encourages kids to set aside their activities and immerse themselves in a book, allowing them to remember the joy of reading without the pressure of tests or goals. As we bring DEAR back, it’s important to reflect on its significant impact on childhood literacy and enthusiasm for books. Research shows that incorporating dedicated reading time into a child’s routine not only helps develop essential reading skills but also fosters creativity and imagination. Imagine a world where children can lose themselves in stories, exploring new ideas and escaping into fantastical realms. This simple act of reading daily can significantly enhance their language development, improve concentration, and boost overall academic performance. To make the DEAR time challenge effective, create a cozy reading nook that is inviting for your child. Choose a diverse range of books to cater to their interests, from adventure tales to mysteries, to instill a sense of excitement around reading. Encourage discussions about the books they read, as it helps deepen their comprehension and critical thinking skills. Share your own reading experiences and favorite stories to inspire them further. In a fast-paced world filled with distractions from technology and video games, reviving DEAR time is crucial for nurturing a generation of passionate readers. As you embark on this challenge, remember to be patient and supportive. Celebrate every moment of reading, reinforcing the idea that reading is a joyous adventure, not a chore. With commitment, we can cultivate lifelong readers one DEAR session at a time.
