although my wildflower garden looks a bit, uhh wild haha, I adore it’s imperfection and overgrown look because it attracted so many bees, caterpillars and butterflies to my yard 🥰 I cleared my side garden of weeds and big rocks and sprinkled a butterfly/bee wildflower mix, and within a few weeks got a colorful, beautiful garden!!
My front walkway area has a mix of perennials and annuals. My ferns in the back will continue to grow bigger over the years and add some nice greenery as a staple shrub. Since the area is so big I like to switch it up year to year with different kinds of annuals. Last year I planted those beautiful pink coleus’ and they exploded and overtook my hostas!! They’re so pretty and did so well I might have to get them again this year 👀

I've learned a few things since I started my own pollinator haven that I'd love to share. It’s not just about scattering seeds – though that's a fantastic start! Think about creating layers in your garden: taller plants in the back provide a backdrop, while medium and shorter ones in front ensure all blooms get sunlight and are visible. Always consider your garden's specific conditions like sun exposure and water drainage for your chosen flowers. To truly attract a variety of butterflies, you need both nectar plants for the adult butterflies and specific host plants for their caterpillars. For example, if you want to see magnificent Monarch butterflies fluttering around, planting Milkweed is an absolute must! I've been so excited to see my Milkweed growing tall, knowing it’s a vital host plant for their lifecycle. For general nectar, I've had amazing success with vibrant African Daisies, cheerful Cosmos, and bright Marigolds – they're not just pretty, they're pollinator magnets for both butterflies and bees! Other great options include coneflowers, asters, and borage. It's amazing to learn the names of the butterflies visiting your garden! Besides Monarchs, you might spot beautiful Swallowtails, Painted Ladies, or even smaller Skippers. Each has its preferred plants, but a diverse mix will attract many. Beyond flowers, providing a shallow water source, like a bird bath with some stones for landing, is also a wonderful idea for all pollinators. And of course, avoiding pesticides is absolutely key – a truly biodiverse garden is a healthy one! Achieving that 'cottagecore garden aesthetic' isn't hard when you embrace a slightly wild and natural look. Don't be afraid of some gentle overflowing! I often let my plants self-seed a bit, which contributes to that natural, effortless charm. It feels more organic and inviting than a perfectly manicured lawn. While my garden might look 'wild,' I still do some light tidying to ensure pathways are clear and to deadhead spent blooms, which encourages more flowers throughout the season. My journey to create this bee and butterfly garden has been incredibly rewarding. It's truly inspiring to step outside and see so much life buzzing and fluttering around.
