☺️Chill Out With This Japanese Read 🍣
🍋 Hi Zesty! I'm back with a Japanese literature reccoemndation "The Kamogawa Food Detectives" by Hisashi Kashiwai. 🐱 It's been a while since my last post as I had been busy adapting to a new job.
"The Kamogawa Food Detectives" first caught my attention with its title. "Food Detectives" already felt enticing enough as who doesn't like food or a good mystery element. Here’s why this might be a good read for you if you like:
1. Fast-Paced Reads🏃♂️
The novel is relatively fast paced as each chapter is a short story in itself. The language is easy to digest and allows the reader to get a satisfying closure with just 1 chapter, making it a good read for the weekend to chill with or if you need a short story before bed to wind down.
2. Feel Good Vibes☺️
The premise of the book is centred on a father-daughter pair running a small restaurant and the setting described evokes a warm, fuzzy feeling with the close proximity between the protagonists and each of their clients. There is also a closure at the end of each story within which readers who like satisfying, closed endings might like.
3. Stories on Food 🍜
The "mystery" itself is that of the food that each client seeks to recreate that is associated with a memory. I think that's a part I like about the book as people do associate strong memories with food but that's something I personally haven't read as much as bring the core plot of a book. The detailed description of how each food is recreated by the protagonist as well is also a nice touch. However, that said, I think the story can feel a bit repetitive toward the end as there is a structured progression that you will come to expect with each chapter.
All in all, I think it's a nice book to relax with and has a reflective, nostalgic element to it. If you like Japanese food, you might enjoy this read as well. However, it's in my opinion not a book that will blow your mind if you are looking for more serious literature to savour, as it is more of an idyllic, calming read that doesn't require a lot of analysis to it.
Have you read "The Kamogawa Food Detectives "? What do you think of it?
Stay safe and happy reading! 🤗
