During my visit to Jieyang, I truly appreciated how the city retains its authentic Chaoshan vibe with less touristy hustle and bustle compared to nearby Chaozhou and Shantou. One of the highlights was exploring Jieyang Xuegong Square and the Cheng Huang Miao temple, where local worshippers gather and traditional offerings are made. The rooftop decorations of the temples displayed intricate craftsmanship that reflects over 2,000 years of history. Walking along ZhongShan street, I admired the charming covered walkways and distinctive shophouse architecture which gave the street a nostalgic feel. This area is perfect for leisurely strolls as you soak in daily life at a slower pace. For food lovers, Jieyang offers an amazing opportunity to enjoy true Teochew cuisine at very affordable prices. I tried a braised platter at a local eatery which cost about Rmb 158 (SGD 30) for four people—an excellent deal for authentic regional flavors. The food felt fresh, hearty, and less commercialized than in more tourist-heavy cities. Transportation to Jieyang is quite convenient; the 25 km trip from Chaozhou takes roughly 30 minutes by Didi ride, costing about Rmb 100 (SGD 20), making it easy for a day trip. For travelers wanting to explore the Chaoshan region beyond Chaozhou and Shantou, Jieyang presents a wonderful option to immerse in tradition, experience local culture firsthand, and enjoy an authentic regional atmosphere untouched by rampant tourism.
