Anime Tropes That Need to Stop

... Read moreAs an avid anime watcher, I’ve noticed how certain tropes tend to appear repeatedly and, frankly, become a bit exhausting over time. One trope that really gets on my nerves is the portrayal of ancient, powerful entities like demons or witches as cute, childlike 'loli' characters. It baffles me why creators often resort to such designs for beings that are supposed to be thousands of years old and immensely powerful. This disconnect between character design and lore can pull me out of the story because it feels unrealistic and a little forced. It almost seems like a shortcut to appeal to a certain fanbase rather than focusing on creative originality. Another trope that I think deserves to fade away is the introduction of familial romantic feelings, often seen in plots involving half-siblings, adopted siblings, or cousins by marriage. The so-called "brother-sister complex" trope is something I personally don't find appealing. It tends to complicate character relationships in uncomfortable ways and can detract from more meaningful storytelling. While I understand romance is a big part of many anime plots, incorporating family ties in this manner often feels unnecessary and sometimes even off-putting. That said, anime is a diverse medium with a rich variety of stories, so not every trope will bother every viewer. However, from my experience and conversations with fellow fans, moving away from these tired clichés could make anime storylines more engaging and relatable. Fresh character designs that truly reflect the story’s lore, and romantic plots that avoid awkward family dynamics, would definitely enhance my viewing experience. Have you encountered these tropes in your favorite shows? What are some tropes you hope anime creators will retire? Sharing personal experiences can shed light on how storytelling can evolve for the better in the anime community.
