... Read moreIt’s true what they say: when you’ve been living with diabetes for a significant amount of time, like my 22 years, eye complications are almost inevitable. Diabetic retinopathy is a scary diagnosis, and for many of us, it means facing laser surgery and, yes, those dreaded eye injections. I remember the first time my doctor told me I needed 'shots in the eye' – my heart sank. It sounded terrifying, but I quickly learned it's a vital part of preserving my vision. So, why are these injections necessary? Diabetic retinopathy occurs when high blood sugar damages the tiny blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of your eye. These damaged vessels can swell, leak fluid, or even grow abnormally, leading to blurred vision and, if untreated, permanent vision loss. The injections, often with anti-VEGF medications, help to reduce the swelling, stop the leakage, and prevent the growth of those troublesome new blood vessels. My personal experience with the procedure has evolved over the years. Initially, I was incredibly anxious. Each appointment brought a wave of apprehension. However, I’ve learned that the process, while daunting in thought, is usually quick and surprisingly manageable. When I arrive, my eye is thoroughly numbed with drops, which helps immensely. They clean the area around my eye, and then, in a matter of seconds, the tiny needle delivers the medication. You might feel a bit of pressure, or a slight sensation, but typically no sharp pain thanks to the numbing. It's a surreal experience, knowing something is being injected into your eye, but I always focus on the outcome: protecting my sight. After the injection, my eye usually feels a little gritty or watery, and sometimes my vision is slightly blurry for a short while. I always make sure to follow my doctor’s post-care instructions, which usually involve avoiding rubbing my eye and using prescribed eye drops. It’s common to see a small red spot where the injection was, like a tiny bruise, but this usually clears up within a few days. I’ve learned to schedule my appointments when I can take it easy for the rest of the day, allowing my eye to rest and recover. Living with diabetic retinopathy and undergoing regular eye injections isn't easy, but it’s a crucial part of managing my diabetes. It has taught me the importance of consistent communication with my ophthalmologist and strict adherence to my treatment plan. If you’re a diabetic and are facing these injections, please know you’re not alone. It’s a powerful tool in our fight to maintain good vision, and with each treatment, I remind myself that I'm taking a proactive step towards a healthier future. Stay strong, stay informed, and keep up with those vital eye exams!

I hate boring foods, so instead of restricting myself, I just eat smarter. What that looks like to me is making smarter swaps, eating less of certain things, and of being more creative in the kitchen. Note: This is what works for ME & helps me be more successful when it comes to my nutritio

nothing quite hits like actual film photos. maybe it’s the fact that you have to take the photo and be okay with whatever outcome you get (vs digital being tempted to shoot until it’s perfect,) or maybe it’s the nostalgic true natural grain? whatever the reason, film is magical and i know i was conf
