... Read moreWe all need a corner of the world that feels uniquely ours, a place where we can truly unwind, recharge, and feel completely at peace. For me, that's my outdoor sacred space, my personal oasis right off my dark gray house. I spent so much time dreaming of a spot that felt like a permanent vacation, and finally, it's a reality! It truly helps me reconnect with myself after a busy week.
My vision came to life with a stunning multi-level black deck. I chose black not just for its modern aesthetic, but also because it creates such a dramatic contrast with the lush greenery of the surrounding yard. The different levels help delineate zones – one for casual dining, one for more relaxed lounging, and my absolute favorite: the fire pit areas. Yes, I have two! There's an octagonal stone fire pit, perfect for quiet, reflective evenings with a mug of tea and a good book, and a larger square dark fire pit that often becomes the heart of our lively gatherings with friends and family. There’s something so primal and comforting about gathering around a flickering flame, isn't there? It instantly brings a cozy, intimate atmosphere.
Comfort was paramount. I opted for plush white outdoor sofas, which not only look incredibly inviting against the dark deck but also offer the perfect spot to sink into after a long day. Keeping them clean is surprisingly easy with outdoor fabric protectors! A beautiful patterned rug anchors the main seating area, adding warmth, texture, and a touch of personality that ties everything together. From the deck, sturdy stairs lead gracefully down to our grassy yard, blurring the lines between our built structure and nature. This makes it feel expansive and seamless. And as dusk falls, the strategically placed ambient lighting on the steps and around the house transforms the entire space into a magical, glowing retreat. It’s truly a 10 out of 10 experience every time I step out there, a place where every stress melts away.
If you're thinking of creating your own sacred place, my biggest tip is to start by identifying what brings you the most calm and joy. Do you crave tranquility for meditation? A lively spot for entertaining? For me, it was all about peace and connection. Consider elements that speak to your soul – whether it's the soothing sound of a small water feature, the vibrant colors of potted plants, or the cozy warmth of a fire pit. Don't be afraid to mix textures and materials, like my rugged stone fire pit against the sleek dark deck, to add depth and interest. Pay attention to lighting; string lights, lanterns, or even solar path lights can completely change the mood of any area after sunset. Even small personal touches, like a favorite scented candle or a collection of outdoor cushions, can make a huge difference in making the space uniquely yours. Remember, your sacred place doesn't have to be grand or expensive; it just needs to be yours and reflect what makes you feel truly at home and at peace.
