... Read moreHey fellow art enthusiasts! After sharing my latest sketchbook additions, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into something many of you might be curious about: starting your own 'sketchbook project.' For me, my sketchbook isn't just a collection of random doodles; it's truly a working project where I push my creative boundaries and explore new ideas. What is a Sketchbook Project, Really? Think of it as a personal creative challenge or a themed exploration within your sketchbook. Instead of drawing whatever comes to mind, you might decide to dedicate pages to a specific focus. For example, my recent additions show how I'm doing a 'travel memories project' with scenes like the Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall subway entrance and that London scene with Big Ben. I also have a 'color exploration project' testing out new pen sets and seeing what all the colors looked like – like that maroon pen! And who could forget my 'nature study project' with seashells by the sea or even a 'mini fruits and veggies' theme to play with vibrant colors? Each of these becomes a mini-project that adds structure and purpose to my drawing time. Why Start Your Own Sketchbook Project? Honestly, it's a fantastic way to boost your skills and stay inspired. When I started focusing on patterns, it really helped develop my drawing skills much faster than just aimlessly sketching. It gives you a clear goal, even if it's just to fill a page a day with a specific theme. It also helps you experiment without the pressure of creating a 'masterpiece.' My 'checkered page' was all about experimenting with new color pens without any expectation, and it was so much fun! Ideas to Kickstart Your Own Project: Theme-based: Choose a single theme for your whole sketchbook or a section of it. Think 'all things nature,' 'cityscapes from my travels,' 'food illustrations,' or even 'daily objects.' Material focus: Dedicate a project to mastering a single medium, like I did with ink pens, or trying out new ones, like testing a new pen set. Skill-building: Focus on a specific skill, like perspective, shading, or patterns (my current obsession!). Color palette challenges: Pick a limited color palette for an entire project, or explore how different colors interact, just like I obsessed over the colors in my 'mini fruits and veggies.' Memory Lane: Draw scenes from places you've been, like the buildings of downtown Ann Arbor, Michigan, or other meaningful locations. Tips for a Successful Sketchbook Project: Don't overthink it: The beauty of a sketchbook is its imperfection. Consistency is key: Even 10-15 minutes a day can make a huge difference. Embrace mistakes: They are learning opportunities! Document your journey: Write notes about your pens, colors, or techniques right on the page. Share your progress: It's super motivating to get feedback and connect with other artists, just like I love hearing which addition is your favorite! So, grab your pens and paper, and let your creativity flow! I can't wait to see what 'sketchbook projects' you come up with!

What supplies do you use besides pen? Everything is so clean and neat so you use a ruler or it’s all freehand?
