Drawing of the day: The Guggenheim Museum ✍️ ✨

Today’s drawing of the day is the interior of the Guggenheim Museum in NYC!

Materials:

- Strathmore sketchbook 5.5” x 8.5” size 📖

- Papermate flair! Medium felt tip pen 🖊️

- Pilot precise V5 rolling ball pen ✍️

The museum itself is art! I absolutely love this architecture and was inspired to try and recreate it in my own way 🥰

I have always struggled with drawing people so in this drawing I turned them into silhouettes 👥 I am very proud of how they turned out 😊

Have you ever been to this museum?

What is your favorite building in NYC? 🏙️

... Read moreAs an artist who loves capturing the essence of iconic buildings, the Guggenheim Museum in NYC has always been a dream subject. Its unique spiral architecture truly makes it a piece of art in itself, and sketching its interior is a fantastic challenge that offers endless 'medium drawing ideas'. If you've been inspired to try your hand at a 'Guggenheim Museum sketch' or any complex architectural drawing, here are a few tips I've picked up along the way that might help. First, don't be intimidated by the complexity. The key to sketching large, intricate structures like the Guggenheim is to break them down into simpler shapes. I usually start by lightly blocking out the main forms – in this case, the central atrium and the curving ramps. Don't worry about perfection; focus on getting the overall proportions right. I find using a basic pencil sketch first, even before committing to ink, helps tremendously. It allows for adjustments without leaving permanent marks on my 'Strathmore Sketchbook'. When it comes to materials, the pens I used, like the 'Papermate flair! pen' and the 'Pilot precise V5 pen', are great for achieving crisp lines and varied textures in an 'ink drawing'. The V5 is fantastic for fine details, while the Flair can give thicker, bolder strokes. For architectural sketches, having a range of line weights can really make a drawing pop. You can use lighter lines for background elements and bolder lines for foreground details to create depth. For those looking for other 'medium drawing ideas', consider charcoal for dramatic light and shadow, or even a light watercolor wash to capture the unique lighting of the museum's interior. One of the biggest hurdles I faced in my own drawing was incorporating people into the scene. The original article mentioned turning them into silhouettes, which is a brilliant solution! Silhouettes add a sense of scale and life without requiring detailed figure drawing, which can be daunting. Another trick I often use is to draw them very small, almost like stick figures, focusing only on their general posture and direction of movement. This way, they add to the atmosphere without distracting from the main subject – the magnificent architecture of the Solomon Guggenheim Museum itself. Remember, the goal isn't to draw every single person perfectly, but to convey the bustling energy of the space. Finally, when sketching places like the Guggenheim Museum, think about what makes the building an 'artwork' in its own right. Is it the way light falls through the skylight? The repetition of the spiral ramps? Or how visitors interact with the space? Focusing on these unique aspects will not only make your drawing more personal but also more compelling. Don't be afraid to experiment with different angles and perspectives. Sometimes, a close-up of a specific architectural detail, or a wide shot capturing the entire interior, can tell a completely different story. Happy sketching!
