Valentine’s Day latte art! Here are 6 different latte art designs including hearts 💕
How I make these:
I have a Breville bambino plus that I use to make lattes everyday! ☕️ I pour the milk like you usually would for latte art - right as the milk is starting to hit the surface I use a toothpick to manipulate and draw my designs 🥰✨

While my main post shows off some of my favorite designs, I wanted to dive a little deeper into how you can achieve them, especially if you're just starting out or want to try different styles than just the classic free pour.
The Secret to Silky Microfoam (It's Easier Than You Think!)
Before you even think about drawing, the key to any successful latte art, whether it's for a latte, cappuccino, or flat white, is perfectly steamed milk. You want microfoam – milk that's glossy, velvety, and without large bubbles. For my Breville Bambino Plus, I make sure to 'stretch' the milk (incorporate air) for just a few seconds at the beginning until it doubles slightly in volume, then 'texture' it (submerge the wand and swirl) until the pitcher is almost too hot to touch. This creates that beautiful, pourable consistency needed for designs like swirl hearts or a big heart with heart ring.
Setting Up Your Canvas: The Basic Pour
Once your espresso shot is ready and your milk is perfectly steamed, give the pitcher a gentle swirl to eliminate any last bubbles. Start pouring your milk into the center of the cup from a slight height, integrating it with the espresso. As the cup fills and the liquid gets closer to the brim, lower your pitcher and bring the spout closer to the surface. This is when you'll see a white canvas appear on top – your stage for heart art!
Mastering the Toothpick for Stunning Heart Designs
This is where the magic happens, especially for beginners who find free-pouring tricky. The toothpick method allows for incredible precision and creativity. Here’s how you can make some of those gorgeous designs you saw:
The Simple 'One Tiny Heart': After you've poured your white canvas, dip the tip of your toothpick into the center of the white milk. Draw a small 'V' shape, then gently drag the tip upwards through the center of the 'V' to create the top curve of the heart. You can also make a dot, then drag the toothpick through it to form a basic heart.
Creating 'Mini Hearts' & 'Swirl Hearts': For multiple mini hearts, create several small dots of milk foam on your canvas. Then, use the toothpick to drag through each dot, forming tiny hearts. For swirl hearts, you can create concentric circles with your toothpick or draw a spiral, then use the toothpick to pull small sections inwards towards the center, shaping little heart-like swirls.
Advanced but Easy: 'Big Heart with Mini Hearts' / 'Dotted Heart': For a big heart with mini hearts, first create a larger heart outline or solid heart. While the milk is still fluid, add smaller dots around or inside it, and turn those into mini hearts with your toothpick. For a dotted heart, simply create an outline of a heart by making small, close-together dots, or dot around a larger central heart.
The 'Heart Ring' Variation: This one is super elegant! Create a central big heart first. Then, either dot small hearts around its perimeter or carefully drag the toothpick in a circular motion to form a ring of smaller heart shapes or patterns around the main heart.
Tips for Different Drinks
Lattes: Aim for a good balance of foam and liquid. The toothpick method works beautifully here as the canvas is typically quite stable.
Cappuccinos: These have a thicker layer of foam. You might need to be quicker with your toothpick work before the foam sets too much. A one tiny heart or mini hearts often work best.
Flat Whites: Known for their thin, velvety microfoam. This can be a bit more challenging for toothpick art as the surface is very fluid, but swirl hearts can look stunning here with a delicate touch.
Don't worry if your first few aren't perfect – practice is key! The beauty of using a toothpick is that it gives you so much control. Keep experimenting with your milk steaming and different dragging techniques. You totally got this, and soon you'll be making adorable heart latte art for every occasion! Which heart design will you try first?
