Gentle / traditional parenting style: happy medium

1. I don’t play about my child’s safety. I don’t typically yell but I am firm on a regular basis. However, when it comes to her safety I will get loud with her. As a child, I dealt with young parents that had very low patience and hot temperament. I was obedient as a child but I also developed chronic anxiety (as a child, I have since rebuked it and refuse to claim this) and feared my parents. I don’t want my children to fear me “because I said so” I want them to know that I’m LEADING them and PROTECTING them as their parent.

2. Obedience is mentioned ALL throughout the Bible whether it’s obeying Gods calling, your parents, your boss, or even your government. It’s considered a God pleasing and righteous act when you obey your parents! MINISTRY STARTS IN THE HOME! By teaching basic levels of obedience they train their posture to be fixated on the Lord and taking up their own crosses to do good by Him!

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭6‬:‭1‬-‭4‬ ‭ESV‬‬

https://bible.com/bible/59/eph.6.1-4.ESV

“Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.”

‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3‬:‭20‬ ‭ESV‬‬

https://bible.com/bible/59/col.3.20.ESV

3. Discipline and abuse are not the same. I don’t believe in hurting or beating children to get a point across. There are other ways that are more suitable with TRUE repercussions that occur in the real world. When you’re late to work, you get talked to and written up. When you break something in a store, you pay for it or repair / replace it. Children should be held to the same standard. BUT that doesn’t mean let it slide, take it easy, or “don’t hurt their feelings.” It means hard work, repayment, firmness, communication. All out of LOVE.

What are your thoughts on gentle or traditional parenting? What has worked best for you?

... Read moreGentle and traditional parenting are often seen as opposing methods, but combining these approaches can create a healthy, balanced parenting style. This method emphasizes the importance of leading and protecting children while nurturing their emotional well-being without inducing fear. According to biblical teachings, obedience is not just about compliance but about honoring God and respecting authority figures, which begins with parents at home. Verses from Ephesians 6:1-4 and Colossians 3:20 highlight that obedience is a righteous act that benefits children’s development and family harmony. Importantly, discipline should never be equated with abuse. Gentle traditional parenting advocates for firm boundaries and natural consequences rather than physical punishment. Just as adults face repercussions for their actions at work or in society, children too should learn responsibility through consistent, loving guidance. This includes communication about actions and their impacts, fostering a sense of accountability and respect. The balance also respects a child’s emotional landscape, ensuring they do not fear their parents but see them as loving leaders. Safety is paramount and justifies firm interventions when necessary, but the goal is always to teach and protect rather than intimidate. Verbal reprimands align more effectively with mature behavior correction, mirroring how adults respond to mistakes. Modern parenting increasingly values emotional intelligence and empathy, yet the foundation of respect and discipline remains integral for raising well-rounded individuals. Families who integrate these principles foster homes where children understand the importance of faith, respect, and responsibility. This approach nurtures children who are both secure in their parents’ love and prepared to navigate the real world with integrity and self-discipline.
